Shanghai, People’s Republic of China – August 15, 2024 – ShanghaiRanking Consultancy today unveiled the 2024 edition of the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), a prestigious annual league table that evaluates the world’s top universities. Since its inception in 2003, ARWU has been widely recognized as the pioneer of global university rankings, known for its transparent methodology and reliance on objective third-party data. This year’s edition analyzed over 2,500 universities, with the top 1,000 institutions being officially ranked.
Harvard University continues its reign at the top of the ARWU, maintaining the No. 1 spot for the 22nd consecutive year. Stanford University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) round out the top three. Notably, Cambridge University secures fourth place, and University of California, Berkeley claims the fifth spot. Other top 10 universities include Oxford University (6th), Princeton University (7th), California Institute of Technology (Caltech) (8th), Columbia University (8th), and the University of Chicago (10th).
Regional highlights
In Continental Europe, Paris-Saclay University continues its rise, climbing three spots to secure 12th place, making it the highest-ranked university in the region. It is followed closely by ETH Zurich (21st), which remains a top institution in Switzerland. Tsinghua University (22nd) maintains its leadership as the top-ranked university in Asia, while University of Melbourne (37th) extends its dominance in Oceania, where it has been the leading institution for 14 consecutive years.
New entrants in the Top 100
The ARWU 2024 also welcomed several new universities to its elite top 100 list. Among the notable new entrants is The Ohio State University – Columbus from the United States, which ascended to 82nd place. King Saud University (90th) from Saudi Arabia and University of Helsinki (99th) from Finland also made significant advancements, marking their first appearance in the top 100. Additionally, three universities from Mainland China—Wuhan University (89th), Xi’an Jiaotong University (95th), and Sichuan University (98th)—have climbed into the prestigious tier.

German and french institutions make strides
This year, Germany achieved a notable milestone with three universities—University of Munich (43rd), Technical University of Munich (47th), and Heidelberg University (50th)—ranking in the top 50 for the first time. With University of Bonn (61st) also ranking high, Germany now boasts four universities in the top 100 and a total of 51 institutions in the top 1,000.
France also showed increased competitiveness, with 25 universities in the top 1,000 and 18 of them within the top 500. Leading French institutions include Paris-Saclay University (12th), PSL University (33rd), Sorbonne University (41st), and Université Paris Cité (60th).
China’s growing presence in global rankings
Chinese universities continue to grow in prominence in global rankings. Mainland China has 203 universities in the top 1,000, surpassing the 183 universities from the United States. At the top 100 level, the U.S. still leads with 38 institutions, compared to 14 from China. Tsinghua University (22nd) and Peking University (24th) spearhead China’s presence in the global academic arena.

- Germany: 4 universities in the top 100, 35 in the top 500, and 51 in the top 1,000.
- France: 4 universities in the top 100, 18 in the top 500, and 25 in the top 1,000.
Other notable countries include Australia with five universities in the top 100, Switzerland with five, and Canada with three.
ARWU methodology and legacy
The ARWU ranking is based on six objective indicators, including the number of alumni and staff who have won Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, the number of Highly Cited Researchers™, the number of articles published in top-tier journals like Nature and Science, and per capita performance. Over 2,500 universities were evaluated in 2024, with the top 1,000 institutions being published.
