Swindon student awarded £1,000 scholarship for academic excellence
A talented student from Swindon has been honoured with a £1,000 scholarship in recognition of her exceptional academic achievements during the 2023/24 academic year.
Lucy Drury, a 20-year-old third-year Sports Therapy student at the University of Worcester, received the prestigious award for her remarkable dedication to her studies and extracurricular endeavours.
Expressing her gratitude, Lucy said: “It feels amazing to be recognised for the effort and dedication I put into my university degree, and I’m grateful for the support I have received from my lecturers to achieve this.”
Lucy’s achievements extend far beyond the classroom. An accomplished netball player, she has made her mark on the sport at both university and national levels. During her first year, she played for the Severn Stars’ under-19 side in the National Premier League and was awarded a sports scholarship in her first two years at university.
Throughout her studies, Lucy has been a key member of the university’s netball first team, competing in the British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) league. Now serving as the team’s vice-captain, she continues to demonstrate her leadership skills and commitment to excellence.
Lucy also represents Worcester Netball Club in the National Premier League 3, dedicating five to six days a week to training and matches, often participating in two sessions per day.
Speaking about her time at the University of Worcester, Lucy said: “I found the university to be a nice environment to be in, with a friendly vibe. It has easy access to the town and good sports facilities, allowing me to continue to play netball at a good level.
“It has been such a good experience and allowed me to expand and push my knowledge past what I thought I would be able to.”
However, balancing her academic and sporting commitments has not been without challenges. The former Hartpury College student admitted: “It has been hard balancing my netball and course due to its practical nature, however, I have been provided with excellent support.”
The University of Worcester’s Provost, Ann Jordan, commended Lucy and her fellow scholarship recipients for their outstanding achievements.
“We are very proud of all our students who earned an academic scholarship or prize this year,” said Ms Jordan. “These students achieved highly in their studies, and their commitment and hard work is something to be recognised and celebrated. We hope this award will inspire them to further academic success in their future studies.”
The scholarships and prizes awarded by the university are supported by philanthropists, including the institution’s distinguished honorary fellows, local employers, and many successful graduates.
Lucy’s story highlights the university’s dedication to fostering academic and athletic excellence. Her success is a testament to the opportunities available to students who are willing to work hard and take advantage of the resources provided by the University of Worcester.
