Toddler nearly runs off cliff at Hawaii volcano

A stark reminder of the dangers at Hawaii’s national parks has emerged after a toddler narrowly avoided a fatal fall at the rim of the Kilauea volcano. The child, who had wandered from his family, was saved “in the nick of time” when his mother managed to grab him just feet away from a 400ft drop.

The harrowing incident unfolded on Christmas Day in a closed area of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, where visitors had gathered to witness the latest eruption of one of the world’s most active volcanoes. The boy darted towards the edge of the volcano’s caldera, a massive crater formed by past eruptions, before his mother’s swift action prevented disaster.

Park rangers have issued a warning, urging tourists to adhere to safety guidelines, stay on designated trails, and keep a close eye on their children.

A close call

The Kilauea volcano, located on Hawaii’s Big Island, began its latest eruption on 23 December, with lava flows drawing crowds of onlookers despite the inherent risks. Jessica Ferracane, a park ranger who witnessed the Christmas Day incident, described the terrifying moment to the BBC.

“The little boy ran straight toward the cliff edge in a split second,” she said. “His mother, screaming, managed to grab him just a foot or so away from what would have been a fatal fall.”

The drop from the cliff at Kilauea’s caldera is not survivable, Ms Ferracane emphasised.

While the eruption is confined to a closed-off section of the park, it continues to attract families hoping to catch a glimpse of lava flows lighting up the volcanic landscape.

Warnings and precautions

The park authorities have reiterated the importance of adhering to safety measures. A statement released by the park highlighted the risks posed to those who disregard warnings.

“Visitors who ignore closure signs, venture into restricted areas, or fail to supervise their loved ones are putting themselves and others in grave danger,” it read.

Ms Ferracane added, “This near-miss serves as a powerful warning. We hope sharing this story will prevent future tragedies.”

The incident underscores the volatile nature of Kilauea, which has been erupting on and off for decades. While eruptions can create awe-inspiring sights, they also pose significant hazards, particularly in areas with unstable terrain and hidden dangers.

Ongoing eruption

Kilauea’s current eruption began with a dramatic display of lava gushing to the surface, delighting geologists and spectators alike. As of the latest update from the US Geological Survey (USGS) Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, the eruption remains active at a low level within the park’s closed areas.

Despite barriers and warning signs, some visitors venture into restricted zones to get closer views of the spectacle, disregarding the potential consequences.

Responsibility for safety

The incident serves as a reminder of the dual responsibility shared by park authorities and visitors. While the park takes extensive measures to secure hazardous areas, tourists must follow guidelines to ensure their safety and that of their loved ones.

Families are especially encouraged to keep children within arm’s reach and avoid distractions. “It only takes a moment for something tragic to happen,” Ms Ferracane noted.

Kilauea’s allure as an active volcano continues to draw thousands of visitors annually, but the risks it poses are ever-present. As authorities work to maintain a balance between accessibility and safety, the chilling near-tragedy highlights the need for vigilance.

Preventing future incidents

National parks across the US grapple with balancing visitor access and natural hazards. The incident at Kilauea highlights the importance of clear communication, enforcement of safety measures, and public awareness campaigns.

Ms Ferracane expressed hope that the shared account of the Christmas Day near-miss would resonate with visitors and instil a greater respect for the park’s guidelines.

“We want everyone to enjoy the beauty of Kilauea safely,” she said. “Let’s make sure such incidents are a lesson and not a prelude to a tragedy.”

As the Kilauea volcano continues its majestic display of nature’s power, the park’s reminder rings clear: stay on the trail, respect closures, and hold your loved ones close. The consequences of neglecting these rules could be devastating.
