Tommy Fury has said he feels “happy mentally” after enduring what he described as the worst year of his life – a period marked by personal struggles, injury, and emotional turbulence. The 26-year-old boxer, known both for his appearances in the ring and on the reality show Love Island, opened up on Good Morning Britain about his recent journey through hardship and recovery.
The professional boxer has been grappling with a hand injury that has plagued him for four years. In 2023, he finally underwent surgery, but the aftermath left him in a dark place both physically and emotionally.
“You fall into a little bit of a dark place,” Fury admitted during his appearance on ITV. “I couldn’t get out of bed in the morning, do what I wanted to do and live and do what makes me happy.” He said the experience had “consequences”, including a shift in his mental health and daily routine.
Fury’s comments came on his birthday, which he marked with quiet reflection rather than celebration. “It don’t really feel like a birthday,” he said. “I’ve got a job to do on Friday, but all the celebrations will begin after Friday night, once we bring home that win.”
He is scheduled to return to the ring this week for the first time since 2023, facing off against Bosnian fighter Kenan Hanjalic. His last bout was a high-profile victory over YouTube star KSI.
Despite the difficult months behind him, Fury expressed optimism for what lies ahead: “2024 was the worst year of my life, and this year is going to be the best year of my life, and it starts on Friday.”
The tumult in Fury’s personal life also drew attention last year when he announced his separation from fiancée Molly-Mae Hague in August 2024. The couple, who met on Love Island and share a daughter, Bambi, had been a fixture in British pop culture. However, hopes for reconciliation surfaced after photos emerged of them kissing on New Year’s Eve.
Speaking to Good Morning Britain, Fury shared that he had spoken with his two-year-old daughter before the broadcast. “It is my birthday today, 26, I’m on the wrong side of 20,” he joked, before adding how important it was to have that moment with Bambi.
Molly-Mae Hague, meanwhile, addressed the media frenzy surrounding their relationship in her Prime Video documentary series Molly-Mae: Behind It All. She denied that the split was a publicity stunt, saying the separation was “incredibly hard” and that they were navigating their relationship “as adults and as parents.”
In a teaser for part two of the series, Hague hinted at the uncertainty of their future, saying: “Things are looking like they are heading in a good direction but by tomorrow, could it all be destroyed again?”
The teaser included clips of her reacting emotionally to the New Year’s Eve images that reignited speculation about a reconciliation.
Fury, half-brother of world heavyweight champion Tyson Fury, has juggled a demanding professional career alongside life in the public eye. While he continues to make his mark in the boxing world, Hague has built her own successful brand, Maebe, and boasts over 8.5 million Instagram followers.
As he prepares to step back into the ring, Fury’s comments suggest a renewed focus on what he loves most – boxing. “I’m back doing what I do best,” he said. “Everyone’s got a hard life. It’s all about how I come through this – and I’ve come through.”
Whether or not the future holds a permanent reconciliation with Molly-Mae, for now, Fury’s sights are firmly set on Friday night and proving he’s not just back, but better than ever.
