Amman – Kuwait has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to supporting the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), as the agency grapples with mounting financial pressures.
On Thursday, Kuwaiti Ambassador to Jordan, Hamad Mari, handed over Kuwait’s annual financial contribution to Tamara Rifai, Director of External Relations and Communications at UNRWA. The ceremony, held in Amman, highlighted Kuwait’s steadfast efforts to help the agency meet its fiscal responsibilities and maintain its essential services for Palestine refugees.
A lifeline for Palestine refugees
In his remarks, Ambassador Mari underscored Kuwait’s dedication to fulfilling its financial obligations to UNRWA, recognising the agency’s pivotal role in supporting Palestine refugees.
“Kuwait is committed to standing by UNRWA and ensuring its ability to continue delivering vital services to those in need,” Mari said, reaffirming his country’s steadfast support for the Palestinian cause.
Tamara Rifai, speaking on behalf of UNRWA, expressed profound gratitude for Kuwait’s enduring generosity. She emphasised that the contribution is critical to sustaining the agency’s operations, which include a wide array of services such as education, healthcare, and social support programmes.
“Kuwait’s support enables UNRWA to uphold its mission of providing essential services to Palestine refugees in the occupied Palestinian Territories, Jordan, and other host countries,” Rifai said.
UNRWA’s critical role
UNRWA serves over 5 million registered Palestine refugees, operating in territories including Gaza, the West Bank, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria. The agency’s initiatives span a broad spectrum, from operating schools and health centres to providing emergency assistance in times of crisis.
