Shiv Nadar School of Law Inaugurated in Chennai

Chennai, Oct 5, 2024: Shiv Nadar School of Law, an ambitious new institution, has been officially inaugurated on the sprawling campus of Shiv Nadar University, Chennai. The ceremony was graced by Supreme Court judge Justice M M Sundresh, who was the chief guest at the event, marking a new chapter in the city’s academic landscape. This new law school aims to transform aspiring legal minds into world-class professionals by blending rigorous legal education with a broader liberal arts approach.

The Shiv Nadar School of Law offers a five-year integrated BA LLB (Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws) programme, duly approved by the Bar Council of India (BCI). The inaugural batch, consisting of 45 students, is just the beginning, with the university aiming to expand the cohort to 120 students in the coming academic year. A significant highlight of the school is its commitment to accessibility and inclusion, as demonstrated by a scholarship scheme that includes full-tuition waivers for several deserving students.

A vision for excellence in legal education

Speaking at the inauguration, Shiv Nadar University Chennai vice-chancellor, Sriman Kumar Bhattacharyya, outlined the institution’s vision. According to him, the Shiv Nadar School of Law aims to nurture a new generation of lawyers equipped to face both national and global challenges. “This law school is set to transform the lives of aspiring legal students, turning them into world-class lawyers,” Bhattacharyya stated. “The unique curriculum, built on global best practices, combines legal studies with a liberal arts programme to foster critical thinking, problem-solving, and a deeper understanding of the social context in which law operates.”

The law school aims to stand out not just through its academic offerings but also through the quality and diversity of its faculty. The teaching body includes professors who have earned their stripes at prestigious institutions such as Oxford, Harvard, Yale, and Princeton. This international influence is designed to expose students to a range of legal systems and schools of thought, helping them develop a more comprehensive understanding of law in a global context.

Additionally, one-fifth of the faculty is composed of active legal practitioners from India and abroad. This unique blend of academic and professional expertise ensures that students will receive a well-rounded education, combining theoretical knowledge with practical skills essential for their future careers. Bhattacharyya emphasized the institution’s commitment to equipping students with a solid foundation in both substantive and procedural law, preparing them for various legal roles across different sectors.

Curriculum rooted in global best practices

The five-year BA LLB programme at the Shiv Nadar School of Law reflects a deep commitment to excellence. The curriculum has been meticulously crafted based on international best practices while staying attuned to the unique needs of Indian law. The school’s approach integrates legal studies with the humanities, offering courses that encourage interdisciplinary thinking, a key skill in navigating complex legal landscapes. The vice-chancellor noted that the integration of liberal arts into the law curriculum is a deliberate strategy to help students think more critically and approach legal issues from a more holistic perspective.

Through this approach, students will be exposed to subjects like sociology, political science, economics, and philosophy, providing them with a broader understanding of the social, political, and economic forces that shape legal systems. This multidisciplinary focus will also help future lawyers tackle real-world challenges with a more nuanced and informed viewpoint, ensuring that they are not only technically proficient but also socially conscious.

State-of-the-art facilities and opportunities

The Shiv Nadar School of Law is housed within the university’s state-of-the-art campus, equipped with modern amenities to support a vibrant academic environment. The facilities include advanced classrooms, a well-stocked library, moot courtrooms, and spaces for collaborative learning. These facilities are designed to foster an interactive learning experience, ensuring that students not only absorb information but actively engage with it.

In addition to classroom learning, the law school offers its students a wide range of opportunities for experiential learning, such as internships, moot courts, and legal aid clinics. These practical experiences are integral to the curriculum, enabling students to apply their theoretical knowledge in real-world scenarios, building skills that are critical to their success in the legal profession.

Looking forward

The launch of the Shiv Nadar School of Law comes at a time when India’s legal landscape is rapidly evolving, with increasing demand for lawyers who are not just proficient in the law but also capable of navigating complex social, political, and economic realities. With its innovative curriculum, world-class faculty, and commitment to holistic education, the law school is poised to become a leading institution for legal studies in India and beyond.

As the school welcomes its first batch of students, it marks the beginning of a journey that promises to shape the future of legal education in the country.
