Google Working on Gemini-Powered ‘AI Replies’ for Pixel Phone App: Report

Google is reportedly developing a new “AI Replies” feature for the Phone app on its Pixel smartphones. According to a report from 9To5Google, this feature will leverage AI-generated responses to enhance the existing Contextual Call Screen, allowing users to respond to calls without physically answering. This move represents Google’s latest attempt to integrate advanced AI functionality into the Pixel ecosystem, making communication more streamlined and efficient.

AI Replies: A Smarter Call Screen Experience

The “AI Replies” feature, discovered within strings of code in the latest beta version of the Phone by Google app, hints at the arrival of a more personalized call-handling experience. Currently, Pixel’s Call Screen allows Google Assistant to screen incoming calls and offer pre-set responses based on the nature of the call. For example, if someone calls to confirm an appointment, the Assistant can suggest responses like “confirm” or “cancel appointment.”

However, AI Replies would take this a step further by offering even more specific responses, generated in real-time by Google’s Gemini AI model. This new functionality, named “Call Assist” in the app code, would use Gemini-powered smart replies that adapt based on the caller’s words and the context of the conversation. This would potentially cover a broader range of situations, making it easier for users to respond to various inquiries without needing to type out replies manually.

Enhanced Personalization and Control for Pixel Users

While AI Replies aims to provide more versatile response options, the feature will reportedly remain optional. Users would have the flexibility to switch between the traditional suggested responses and the more dynamic, AI-generated replies, based on their preference and comfort level. This option to toggle between reply types ensures that users can decide how much control they want to give AI over their interactions.

For example, if a user feels more comfortable with general responses, they can stick to the existing options. But those who want the convenience of more nuanced responses can enable AI Replies, giving them a richer set of replies tailored to the situation.

Leveraging Google’s Gemini AI Models

The AI Replies feature is expected to draw on Google’s advanced Gemini AI models, which the tech giant has been developing as part of its long-term AI strategy. Gemini is a suite of large language models designed to handle various language-based tasks, from text generation to contextual understanding. The implementation of Gemini AI in the Phone app underscores Google’s commitment to incorporating AI into everyday smartphone functions.

Additionally, Google’s latest Gemini 2.0 model is anticipated to launch in December, bringing with it improved performance and new capabilities. This release is expected to compete with OpenAI’s upcoming AI model and other advancements in the AI space. The Gemini 2.0 model will likely enhance AI Replies, offering even better response accuracy and relevance, and positioning Pixel devices as leaders in smartphone AI.

Project Jarvis: Google’s Next AI Venture

Besides Gemini and the anticipated AI Replies feature, Google is also reportedly working on an AI-powered agent known as “Project Jarvis.” This AI agent is expected to automate web-based tasks, including researching information, purchasing products, and booking tickets online. Built to work alongside or potentially within Gemini-powered systems, Project Jarvis could mark a new era for Google’s AI capabilities.

The potential integration of Project Jarvis with Google’s existing apps would be a substantial leap toward making Pixel smartphones even more intelligent and user-friendly. While there’s no official launch date for Jarvis, industry experts speculate that its development aligns with Google’s goal to stay ahead in the AI-driven technology market.

Future Implications and the Pixel Feature Drop

The introduction of AI Replies is expected to coincide with a future Pixel feature drop, which regularly brings new capabilities to select Pixel devices. Google’s feature drops have previously introduced tools like Adaptive Sound and Extreme Battery Saver, and the addition of AI Replies would continue this trend of adding advanced, AI-centric features.

As Google continues to innovate with AI across its product range, the integration of AI Replies could make Pixel phones particularly appealing for users who value hands-free assistance and enhanced control over their communication. Furthermore, as AI technology continues to advance, we may see Google implement similar functionality across more of its ecosystem, including smart home devices and other Android-based applications.

Google’s Vision for AI-Powered Communication

By developing AI Replies for the Pixel Phone app, Google is betting on AI to redefine how we handle calls and manage our digital interactions. The project reflects a broader ambition within Google to make AI accessible, practical, and an integral part of everyday smartphone use. With the powerful Gemini models driving these changes, the future of communication on Pixel devices looks increasingly seamless, efficient, and personalized.

While details remain unofficial, the AI Replies feature suggests that Google is continuing to invest heavily in transforming the Pixel phone into a cutting-edge AI companion. If successful, this technology could shape the future of digital communication, providing users with intuitive tools that make interacting with their devices easier than ever before.
