Keir Starmer to unveil vision for UK as world leader in AI
Prime Minister Keir Starmer is set to announce his ambitious plan to position Britain as a global leader in artificial intelligence (AI). In a speech scheduled for Monday, Starmer will outline strategies to make AI central to his vision for economic growth, pledging to establish special zones for data centres and boost the number of graduates pursuing technology-focused courses.

These recommendations include streamlining planning permissions and fast-tracking energy connections for data centres. The first of these advanced facilities will be built in Culham, Oxfordshire, home to the UK Atomic Energy Authority.
“Our plan will make Britain the world leader in artificial intelligence,” Starmer said in a statement issued by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology. “That means more jobs and investment in the UK, and more money in people’s pockets.”
The announcement comes as nations worldwide compete to establish themselves as AI hubs while carefully managing the risks associated with the rapidly evolving technology. Britain, already the third-largest AI market globally—behind the United States and China—has strong foundations in investment, patents, and innovation, according to Stanford University’s AI Index. However, recent economic challenges, including the highest tax-raising budget since 1993 and stagnant growth in the last quarter, as estimated by the Bank of England, have tempered business confidence.
Starmer’s speech will stress the importance of acting decisively to harness the benefits of AI.
