A British teenager has tragically died while travelling in Vietnam on a gap year before beginning her university studies. Orla Wates, 19, from London, fell from the back of a motorcycle while riding the Ha Giang Loop in northern Vietnam, a challenging 350 km mountainous route popular among travellers.
According to Viet Nam News, she was taken to Hanoi’s Viet Duc Friendship Hospital, where she passed away on 2 April 2026, with her parents at her bedside.
“Orla had a sharp wit and lived life to the full,” her parents said.
Orla was due to start a degree at Durham University and was the daughter of Andrew Wates, director of the family-owned construction firm Wates Group, and Henrietta Wates. She had three siblings.
Organ Donation and Legacy
In an act of compassion, the Wates family chose to donate Orla’s organs, which have reportedly saved five critically ill Vietnamese patients. A hospital representative highlighted the significance of this decision:
“In the face of profound grief, her family made a deeply compassionate decision that transcended nationality and race, giving others a chance at life.”
Andrew Wates said that Orla had loved Vietnam, making the family’s decision to give back especially meaningful.
Safety and Travel Context
The Ha Giang Loop is a scenic but dangerous route that many travel on guided motorcycles. Vietnam is known for hazardous road conditions, with over 10,000 traffic fatalities and 16,000 injuries reported in 2024. Tour operators frequently advise that inexperienced riders travel with local guides.
The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) confirmed support for Orla’s family, stating:
“Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Orla Wates, following her tragic death in Vietnam.”
