Two teenage boys arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving
A community in West Yorkshire has been left heartbroken after a beloved mother-of-five was killed in a devastating hit-and-run incident outside a popular pub in Halifax.
Sue Davis, 50, was struck by a silver Mazda 5 outside the Flying Pig pub on Crag Lane shortly after 1am on Tuesday. The vehicle failed to stop at the scene and continued driving towards Halifax town centre, leaving Ms Davis fatally injured.
Emergency services rushed to the scene, but despite the best efforts of paramedics, Ms Davis was pronounced dead shortly afterwards. West Yorkshire Police have confirmed that two teenage boys, aged 15 and 18, have since been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. Both have been released on bail pending further enquiries.
The incident is being investigated by the force’s Major Collision Enquiry Team, which continues to appeal for witnesses and dashcam footage to help piece together the events that led to Ms Davis’s tragic death.
In a heartfelt tribute released by her devastated family, Ms Davis was described as “a great, vibrant character” who brought joy to everyone who knew her.
The statement read: “Sue was a great, vibrant character. There was never a dull moment with her. She was a mother-of-five and was well-known within her community. She will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.”
Neighbours and friends of Ms Davis have also spoken of their grief, describing her as a warm and generous woman who was deeply involved in local life.
“She was always smiling and had time for everyone,” said one neighbour. “It’s just so shocking and sad. She had a big family, and she was devoted to them. It’s absolutely devastating.”
The Flying Pig pub, where the incident occurred, has expressed its condolences to Ms Davis’s family and offered support to anyone affected by the tragedy. Staff at the pub have also provided statements to police and urged anyone with information to come forward.
A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police said: “We are continuing to investigate this incident and are keen to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the collision or seen the movements of the silver Mazda 5 in the area prior to the crash.
“If you have any information, including dashcam or CCTV footage that may assist the investigation, please get in touch as soon as possible.”
The force added that anyone with relevant information should contact them by dialling 101 or using the live chat facility on the West Yorkshire Police website, quoting reference 13250210623.
The incident has renewed calls for stronger measures to tackle dangerous driving and to educate young drivers about the serious consequences of reckless behaviour on the roads.
Local councillor Joanne Hughes commented: “This is an unimaginable tragedy for Sue’s family, and for our community as a whole. We must do more to protect pedestrians and make sure that drivers – especially young ones – understand the responsibility that comes with being behind the wheel.”
As the investigation continues, a growing number of floral tributes and messages of condolence have been laid near the scene, a touching sign of the impact Sue Davis had on those around her.
Her tragic death has not only robbed five children of their mother, but left an entire community mourning the loss of a bright and spirited woman whose life was taken far too soon.
