Anthropic’s Claude is experiencing its most significant outage to date, with tens of thousands of users unable to access the AI assistant across all platforms. The disruption — which affects Claude’s chat interface, Claude Code, Claude Cowork, and the developer API — began on the afternoon of 23 June 2026 and is still ongoing at the time of writing.
Downdetector reported a sharp spike in complaints starting at around 10:02am ET (3:02pm BST), with reports climbing past 8,000 in the United States alone. Anthropic confirmed the disruption on its status page, acknowledging an “elevated error rate” across all models before later escalating the classification to a “major outage.”
Current status
Anthropic says a fix has been implemented and results are being monitored. Users are still experiencing issues, but Downdetector reports are beginning to dip from their peak of over 7,000. Claude for Government appears unaffected.
Bigger than the last outage
The last notable Claude outage was just three weeks ago, on 2 June. That incident was narrower in scope, affecting primarily the Opus 4.6 model. Today’s disruption is far broader: every model on every platform has been hit, whether you’re on a free account or a paid subscription.
Users attempting to use Claude are met with either an endlessly “contemplating” response or the message “this model isn’t available right now” — on both the web interface and Claude Code.
