On Monday, Sweden unveiled a ground-breaking new law that permits grandparents to take over and get paid parental leave for up to three months during a child’s first year of life. This outcome follows the government’s plan to transfer parental allowance, which was accepted by the 349-seat Riksdag, the Swedish parliament, in December of last year.
This occurred fifty years after the Nordic nation was the first globally to implement paid leave for fathers as well as mothers.
Parents are allowed to give the grandparents of their child a portion of their generous parental leave stipend. As per the Social Insurance organization, a government organization responsible for managing the social insurance system, a parent couple can transfer a maximum of 45 days to others, whereas a single parent can transfer 90 days.
With a population of 10 million, this Scandinavian nation is well-known for its taxpayer-funded social welfare system and has developed a culture where people are cared for from birth to death throughout many generations.
When your child is born, you are entitled to a complete leave of absence from work in Sweden. Each child receives parental benefit payments for 480 days or around 16 months. Of those, the 390-day compensation is determined using the individual’s entire income. People receive a fixed amount of 180 kronor (USD 17) per day for the next ninety days.
In addition, parents in Sweden can work fewer hours until their child becomes eight years old, and government employees can work fewer hours until their child turns twelve. According to agency spokesperson Alexandra Wallin, the new regulation will “give greater opportunities” to Swedish broadcaster SVT. She added, however, that the regulations governing grandparents are the same as those governing regular parental leave and that eligibility is based on insurance, which the majority of Swedish citizens have.
Parental allowance is subject to certain requirements; for instance, a retiree may take parental leave, in which case their pension would be used to determine their compensation. While receiving parental allowance, a person is not permitted to pursue further education or employment.
