Next-generation voice assistant promises conversational responses and proactive assistance — but comes with subscription fee for non-Prime users
Amazon has begun rolling out Alexa+, a major AI-powered upgrade to its Echo smart speaker, across the UK — making Britain the first European country to receive the next-generation voice assistant
.
The upgrade, which launched in the US, Canada, and Mexico earlier this year, represents Amazon’s attempt to revitalise its digital assistant amid criticism that Alexa had stagnated while rivals like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Claude advanced rapidly
.
From Robotic to Conversational
The difference between old and new is immediately apparent. Where the current Alexa responds to weather queries with brief factual statements — “No rain is expected today” — Alexa+ delivers context-aware, conversational replies: “Actually, you can leave the brolly at home, with sunny skies and no rain in the forecast, you’ll be sorted without it”
.
This shift toward natural dialogue is powered by generative AI, enabling Alexa+ to follow conversation threads, remember context, and respond without requiring users to repeat the wake word
.
“UK consumers will notice an immediate difference,” said Jessica Miller, head of data insights at FDM/CCS Insight. “Using Alexa+ is a very different experience”
. Miller predicts the change could polarise users — some will appreciate the relaxed interactions, while others may find the familiar tone disconcerting
.
British by Design
Amazon has specifically localised Alexa+ for UK audiences. The assistant understands British colloquialisms — knowing that “knackered” means tired, “nippy” means cold, and “cuppa” refers to tea. It even incorporates phrases like “you’re taking the mickey” and “Bob’s your uncle” into conversations
.
Local engineering teams at Amazon’s Cambridge Tech Hub developed regional speech recognition to handle British accents and linguistic nuances, such as date formatting differences (“the 15th of March” versus “March 15th”)
.
Beyond Voice Commands
Unlike traditional voice assistants that simply execute commands, Alexa+ is designed to complete tasks from start to finish. Users can book restaurant reservations via OpenTable, schedule massages through Treatwell, order takeaway from JustEat, and find tradespeople — all through conversational requests
.
The system also features “ambient intelligence,” operating across devices throughout the day. A conversation started on an Echo speaker can continue in the Alexa app or on a web browser later
.
Pricing and Availability
Alexa+ is currently available through an Early Access program, with invitations being sent to hundreds of thousands of UK customers in the coming weeks
. New purchases of eligible Echo devices (Echo Dot Max, Echo Studio, Echo Show 8, and Echo Show 11) receive immediate access
.
After the Early Access period ends, Alexa+ will cost £19.99 per month — though it remains free for Amazon Prime members (£95 annually) .
The Stakes for Amazon
The upgrade comes as Amazon attempts to reverse years of losses on its Echo division. The device has reportedly cost the company billions, with customers typically purchasing the hardware but failing to generate ongoing revenue through additional purchases
.
Industry observers note that even without significant subscription revenue, more detailed conversations with Alexa+ could provide Amazon with valuable user data to improve targeted advertising
.
Google has announced similar AI integration for its Nest devices, rebranding as “Gemini for Home,” though its smart speaker hardware has not been updated since 2021 .
Amazon reports that 52% of UK households have tried an Echo device, with 114 billion interactions recorded since 2023 — approximately 1,500 interactions per person nationally
.
Alexa+ is rolling out now across the UK. Existing Echo owners can register for Early Access, while new device purchases include immediate activation.
