Google Releases First Developer Preview of Android 16 on Pixels: What’s New

Just a month after the rollout of Android 15, Google has unveiled the first Developer Preview of Android 16 for its Pixel smartphones. The announcement was made via the official Android Developer Blog, and the preview is now available for developers to begin testing their apps on the upcoming Android version. Android 16 Developer Preview 1 introduces several new features, including Audio Sharing, Notification Cooldown, Health Records, and more, offering a glimpse into the new capabilities coming to Android users in 2025.

This move aligns with Google’s earlier announcement about its plans to adopt a more frequent release schedule for Android updates, with two updates expected in 2025. The first of these updates will be the major release in Q2, which has now been confirmed as Android 16.

Android 16 Developer Preview 1: Compatibility and Access

The Android 16 Developer Preview 1 is currently available for developers with Pixel 6 and newer devices. Developers can also access it through the Android Emulator. As a developer-focused release, it’s meant to give app creators the opportunity to test their apps and ensure compatibility with the new version ahead of the official rollout.

While Android 16 is still in its early stages, this preview offers a good indication of what users can expect when the full version is released later next year. Several features stand out in this initial preview, with the following updates being particularly notable:

Key New Features in Android 16 Developer Preview 1

  1. Embedded Photo Picker
One of the most significant updates in Android 16 is the improved photo picker. This feature, which allows apps to access images and videos from both local and cloud storage, is being enhanced to provide a smoother user experience. With the new update, the photo picker will feel more integrated within apps, rather than functioning as a standalone overlay. This seamless integration is expected to improve the overall user interface and make image and video selection more intuitive.
  2. Health Records
Android 16 introduces Health Records within the Health Connect platform, enabling third-party apps to access a user’s health data, such as vaccination records and lab results, with the user’s permission. This could have significant implications for health and fitness apps, allowing them to gather more comprehensive information to offer personalised recommendations. With privacy at the forefront, users will be able to control which apps can access their health data, making it a more secure and reliable feature.
  3. Notification Cooldown
Google has introduced a much-needed feature to manage the volume and frequency of notifications. Notification Cooldown is designed to reduce the bombardment of notifications when multiple alerts are received in quick succession. For up to two minutes, notifications will be throttled, giving users a break from constant interruptions. Notably, critical alerts such as calls, alarms, and priority conversations will remain unaffected, ensuring that important notifications are not missed.
  4. Audio Sharing
Android 16 brings a long-awaited feature: Audio Sharing. This feature allows multiple Bluetooth headphones to connect to a single device simultaneously, enabling shared media playback. Whether it’s listening to music, watching videos, or playing games, users can now enjoy media content together, making it perfect for social settings. However, this feature will require Bluetooth LE-compatible devices, which is something users will need to consider when setting up their devices.

Additional Updates in Android 16 Developer Preview 1

Apart from the major features mentioned above, Android 16 Developer Preview 1 also includes several other updates aimed at improving the user experience and security:

  • Privacy Enhancements: As part of the updated Privacy Sandbox, new privacy features will offer users more control over their data. These updates are designed to provide a safer and more transparent Android ecosystem, aligning with Google’s ongoing efforts to enhance user privacy.
  • Minor UI Enhancements: Android 16 introduces small, but useful, improvements to the user interface. These tweaks aim to provide a cleaner and more polished visual experience, making Android feel more modern and user-friendly.
  • Bug Fixes and Performance Improvements: As expected with any new release, the preview also includes a range of bug fixes and performance enhancements to improve the stability of the operating system.

What’s Next for Android 16?

While Android 16 is still in its early stages, this first developer preview provides a sneak peek at some exciting new features that will be available in the final release. Developers now have the opportunity to test and optimise their apps for Android 16, which should ensure that the transition to the new version is as smooth as possible for users.

Google’s decision to release two major updates in 2025 signifies its commitment to delivering more regular and timely updates to its Android ecosystem. As Android 16’s official release date approaches, we can expect even more features to be revealed in subsequent previews, and Android enthusiasts are sure to be excited about what the full version will offer.

For now, developers can get started with Android 16 Developer Preview 1 and begin exploring the new features that will soon make their way to Android smartphones worldwide.
