A 22-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder after a broad daylight shooting in Newham left three men injured, including one with a gunshot wound, earlier this week.
The suspect, Mohammed Abdullah Khan, of Upton Lane, has been formally charged with attempting to murder a 33-year-old man who was shot at a residential address on Dunbar Road around 2.42pm on Tuesday, 29 April. He is also facing charges of possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life and possession of a prohibited weapon.
Another man, Mohammed Qasim Khan, 37, of Sprowston Road, has also been charged in connection with the same incident. He faces allegations of grievous bodily harm (GBH) and violent disorder. The Metropolitan Police confirmed that both men are due to appear at Thames Magistrates’ Court on Saturday, 3 May.
The attack, which occurred in the middle of the afternoon on a busy east London street, prompted a rapid response from emergency services. Officers from the Met, along with paramedics from the London Ambulance Service, were called to the scene following reports of a serious altercation involving multiple individuals.
Upon arrival, emergency responders discovered one man suffering from a gunshot wound. Two other individuals were also found with facial injuries, believed to have been sustained during the same incident. All three men received initial treatment at the scene before being taken to hospital. Fortunately, none of their injuries are currently considered to be life-threatening or life-changing.
The shooting has left local residents shocked, with many expressing concern over the increasing levels of violence in their community. Speaking anonymously, one resident said: “It’s terrifying to think something like this could happen in broad daylight. We’re used to disturbances now and again, but guns being fired in the middle of the afternoon is a whole new level.”
Another local, who lives just off Dunbar Road, added: “This used to be a quiet area. There are kids and families around here, and now people are scared to step outside.”
Police moved quickly to detain the suspects, with both Abdullah Khan and Qasim Khan arrested shortly after the incident. The men have remained in custody since their arrest as detectives continue to piece together the events leading up to the violent confrontation.
A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said: “This was a serious incident involving a firearm in a residential part of east London. Our officers responded swiftly and arrests were made shortly after the attack. We would like to reassure the community that a full investigation is underway.”
Detectives are now appealing for anyone with information or who may have witnessed the incident to come forward. Members of the public can contact the Metropolitan Police by calling 101 and quoting reference number 4319/29Apr. Alternatively, information can be provided anonymously through the independent charity Crimestoppers by calling 0800 555 111.
The force also confirmed that officers remain in the area conducting enquiries and providing reassurance to residents.
While firearm incidents remain relatively rare in London, this latest case has added to growing concerns around knife and gun crime in the capital. Local councillors are expected to meet with police in the coming days to discuss community safety measures and ensure residents are kept informed about the progress of the investigation.
As both suspects prepare to appear in court, the Metropolitan Police continue to appeal for any CCTV, dashcam footage, or witness accounts that may assist in building a clearer picture of what unfolded on Tuesday afternoon in Newham.
Anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious in the area of Dunbar Road around the time of the incident is strongly encouraged to get in touch with investigators.
