Instagram introduces ‘Teen Accounts’: Check key features, privacy details

Instagram, the popular social media platform, has recently introduced a set of new safety measures tailored to its younger audience. The latest update, called “Teen Accounts”, is aimed at safeguarding users aged 13 to 17 from the various online risks associated with social media. With rising concerns about the impact of platforms like Instagram on the mental health and well-being of teenagers, this move seeks to provide a safer and more controlled environment for young users.

Why is instagram introducing teen accounts?

Instagram’s parent company, Meta, has faced increasing scrutiny from mental health experts, advocacy groups, and even government bodies worldwide. Concerns have been raised about social media’s role in amplifying issues like anxiety, cyberbullying, addiction, body image problems, and low self-esteem, particularly among teenagers.

Numerous studies have pointed to the negative mental health impacts linked to social media usage. Teenage users, who are often more vulnerable to these effects, are seen as particularly at risk. This has led to governments and advocacy groups, especially in countries like the United States and Australia, pushing for stronger protections for minors online. Some countries have gone as far as introducing age restrictions and laws regulating how social media companies handle teen users.

In response, Instagram has rolled out its “Teen Accounts” feature, which automatically implements various safety settings and privacy measures for users aged 13 to 17. The goal is to mitigate some of the adverse effects of social media on teenagers while ensuring their online experience is safe and manageable.

Key features of instagram’s teen accounts

Instagram’s Teen Accounts come with several built-in protections and restrictions specifically designed to create a safer space for young users. Here are the standout features:

  1. Private Account by Default
When users between the ages of 13 and 17 create an account, it will automatically be set to private. This feature prevents strangers from viewing the teen’s posts and interacting with their profile unless they accept a follow request. The move aims to reduce exposure to potentially harmful interactions and allow teens to maintain greater control over who sees their content.
  2. Messaging Controls
Direct messaging (DM) on Instagram is one of the key areas where teenagers can encounter risks such as cyberbullying, unsolicited messages, or inappropriate interactions. The new controls ensure that teens can only receive direct messages from people they follow. This prevents unwanted contact from strangers or adults who do not follow them, significantly reducing the risk of harmful interactions through DMs.
  3. Content Filtering
Instagram will now provide stronger content filtering for teen accounts, shielding them from inappropriate or harmful content. This includes content that could negatively affect their mental health or expose them to inappropriate subjects. By filtering out sensitive content, Instagram hopes to create a safer browsing experience for teenagers.
  4. Limited Interaction with Adults
In an effort to curb unwanted or potentially dangerous interactions, Instagram will limit how adults can engage with teenagers on the platform. Adults who don’t follow a teen’s profile will face restrictions, making it more difficult for them to send messages or interact with teen users. This feature aims to prevent unsolicited messages or risky interactions between adults and teenagers.
  5. Time Management Prompts
Instagram has also introduced tools to promote healthier social media habits among teens. They will now receive prompts encouraging them to manage their screen time, helping them to be more mindful of the time they spend on the app. This feature aims to address concerns about social media addiction and excessive screen time, which have been linked to mental health issues.

Parents’ supervision feature

In addition to the teen-specific protections, Instagram is launching a Parents’ Supervision Feature. This tool will allow parents to have more control and insight into their teen’s Instagram activity, creating a balance between providing freedom and ensuring safety.

  • Screen Time Control: Parents will be able to set daily screen time limits, restricting how long their children can spend on Instagram each day. This helps to prevent overuse and encourages healthier digital habits.
  • Content and Interaction Monitoring: Parents can see the types of content their teen is engaging with and monitor their interactions with other users. This feature provides parents with peace of mind, knowing they have insight into the topics and users their children are exposed to.
  • Time Restrictions: Parents can block Instagram usage during specific hours, such as during school time or late at night, ensuring their children stay focused on other activities when needed.

Age verification methods

One of the critical challenges in rolling out age-specific protections is ensuring that users are honest about their age. To address this, Instagram has partnered with Yoti, a company specializing in digital age verification, to introduce video selfies as a method of confirming a user’s age. This technology uses AI to analyze the selfie and determine the user’s age, ensuring that the age restrictions and safety features are properly applied.

Conclusion

Instagram’s introduction of Teen Accounts represents a significant step towards creating a safer and more controlled environment for its younger users. By implementing these privacy and safety features, Meta aims to reduce the harmful impacts of social media on teenagers’ mental health, provide them with more control over their online experience, and offer parents the tools they need to protect their children. As social media continues to evolve, Instagram’s latest measures set a new standard for how platforms can protect vulnerable users from online risks.
