Modi Govt Wrote New Chapters in Governance in First 100 Days: Think Tank PPRC

In a robust assessment of the Modi government’s initial 100 days post-re-election, the Public Policy Research Centre (PPRC) has lauded the administration for its dynamic approach to governance. Released on Monday, the monograph titled “100 Milestones in Hundred Days” outlines significant decisions made by the BJP-led NDA government, positioning these moves as transformative and indicative of a strong political will.

Vinay Sahasrabuddhe, BJP vice president and Rajya Sabha MP, addressed reporters, emphasizing that this period has marked a stark departure from the more laid-back attitudes typically seen in previous administrations upon their return to power. He highlighted that the Parliament’s first session after the NDA’s re-election was the most productive in recent memory, with the Lok Sabha achieving an impressive productivity rate of 137 percent and the Rajya Sabha at 103 percent.

Key Achievements and Legislative Milestones

One of the cornerstone achievements cited by Sahasrabuddhe is the government’s long-standing commitment to abrogating Article 370, which conferred special status upon Jammu and Kashmir. He noted that this decision, along with the bifurcation of the region into two union territories, exemplifies the government’s resolve to tackle longstanding and contentious issues head-on. Additionally, the successful passage of legislation against the practice of instant triple talaq was portrayed as a significant stride toward implementing a uniform civil code, reinforcing the government’s intent to modernize and unify personal laws.

Sahasrabuddhe also pointed out the government’s efforts to merge public sector banks as part of a broader economic reform agenda. This move is anticipated to streamline operations, reduce redundancies, and strengthen the financial sector, ultimately benefiting the economy at large.

Participatory Development Initiatives

The PPRC’s report also underlines Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s emphasis on “participatory development.” Sahasrabuddhe mentioned the Prime Minister’s recent call for citizens to eliminate single-use plastics and to promote smaller family sizes as part of a broader commitment to social responsibility and environmental sustainability. He noted that Modi has consistently made cleanliness a central theme of his governance, a hallmark that was established during his first term.

This proactive stance marks a departure from what Sahasrabuddhe described as an “easygoing approach” that characterized the Congress-led UPA government’s second term from 2009 to 2014. He suggested that the current administration’s urgency and decisiveness stand in stark contrast to previous governments that often became complacent after re-election.

Legislative Developments and Security Measures

The report highlighted several other critical legislative advancements, including the passage of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Amendment) Bill. This law imposes harsher penalties for sexual crimes against children, reflecting a commitment to safeguarding vulnerable populations.

Furthermore, the announcement of the appointment of a Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) was noted as a significant step towards enhancing national security and streamlining military operations. This decision is expected to bolster India’s defense capabilities and improve coordination among the armed forces.

Public Response and Political Landscape

As the Modi government settles into its new term, the political landscape remains charged. While the PPRC’s assessment presents a favorable view of the government’s initiatives, critics may question the sustainability and long-term impact of these measures. Nevertheless, the immediate productivity and legislative achievements are poised to shape the government’s narrative as it moves forward.

In summary, the PPRC’s monograph serves as both a report card and a rallying call for the Modi administration, suggesting that the first 100 days have set a precedent for governance marked by decisiveness, accountability, and a renewed focus on pressing social and economic issues. As the country moves ahead, the government’s ability to maintain this momentum will be crucial in shaping public perception and political stability in the months to come.
