ChatGPT’s new image generator sparks online frenzy: What is Studio Ghibli?

OpenAI has ignited a storm of excitement online with the latest upgrade to ChatGPT-4o, introducing an advanced image generation feature known as ‘4o Image Generation’. This cutting-edge tool, launched on Wednesday, allows users to create highly detailed and stylistically diverse images directly within the ChatGPT platform, prompting an explosion of creativity across social media.

Among the most talked-about applications of the new feature is its ability to replicate the beloved artistic style of Studio Ghibli, the renowned Japanese animation studio. Almost immediately after its release, users flooded platforms like X and Instagram with AI-generated images that mimicked Ghibli’s iconic hand-drawn aesthetic.

A new era of AI-generated art

In its official announcement, OpenAI described its latest tool as the “most advanced image generator yet,” seamlessly integrating text and visuals within a single multimodal model. Unlike previous iterations of AI-generated imagery, which relied on external tools like OpenAI’s DALL-E, this feature is built natively into ChatGPT-4o.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman joined in on the trend by changing his profile picture on X to a Ghibli-style version of himself, inviting users to generate even better renditions. His humorous post about the unexpected response to the feature quickly went viral:

“Be me. Grind for a decade trying to help make superintelligence to cure cancer or whatever. Mostly no one cares for the first 7.5 years, then for 2.5 years everyone hates you for everything. Wake up one day to hundreds of messages: ‘Look, I made you into a twink Ghibli-style haha.’”

What is Studio Ghibli?

Studio Ghibli is a legendary Japanese animation studio, founded in 1985 by directors Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, alongside producer Toshio Suzuki. It has produced some of the most visually stunning and narratively profound animated films in history, including:

  • Spirited Away (2001) – Winner of the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature
  • My Neighbor Totoro (1988) – Featuring the globally recognised character Totoro
  • Howl’s Moving Castle (2004) – A fantasy epic with breathtaking animation

Ghibli’s films are celebrated for their hand-drawn animation, deeply emotional storytelling, and themes of nature, resilience, and wonder.

Miyazaki’s opposition to AI-generated art

Although Studio Ghibli has not officially responded to OpenAI’s new tool, Hayao Miyazaki has previously been vocal about his disdain for AI-generated animation. In a widely circulated 2016 interview, he criticised artificial intelligence in animation, calling it:

“An insult to life itself.”

Miyazaki argued that AI-driven visuals lacked the human touch and emotional depth that traditional animation embodies. He expressed disgust at the concept, stating that those who develop such technology “have no understanding of pain” and that he would never incorporate AI into his work.

How does OpenAI’s new image generator work?

ChatGPT-4o’s built-in image generation tool allows users to create visuals directly within the chat interface by simply inputting a text prompt. The system can generate a range of artistic styles, adjust aspect ratios, incorporate specific colour schemes using hex codes, and even produce transparent backgrounds.

Additionally, OpenAI has introduced image analysis capabilities, allowing ChatGPT-4o to process user-uploaded images and integrate details from them into generated outputs. In an official blog post, OpenAI stated:

“We trained our models on the joint distribution of online images and text, learning not just how images relate to language, but how they relate to each other.”

Unlike previous AI tools, ChatGPT-4o’s model excels at accurately rendering text, precisely following prompts, and maintaining consistency within a generated image—key improvements that elevate AI art from a novelty to a functional tool.

To address ethical concerns, OpenAI has implemented strict content moderation, stating that the model will block requests for explicit content, child sexual abuse materials, and deepfake imagery.

Beyond Studio Ghibli: Expanding creative possibilities

While Studio Ghibli-inspired imagery has captured much of the internet’s attention, ChatGPT-4o’s new image generation tool is far more versatile. Users have been experimenting with styles inspired by:

  • South Park – Simple, cut-out animation
  • Minecraft – Pixel-based, blocky visuals
  • Lego – Toy-like 3D constructions
  • Voxel Art – A digital, cube-based aesthetic
  • Watercolour & Oil Painting – Traditional fine art styles
  • Rubber Hose Animation – Inspired by early 20th-century cartoons

Beyond entertainment, the tool is proving to be a valuable asset for designers and marketers, aiding in the creation of infographics, product mockups, posters, and logos.

Rollout delayed for free users

Due to the overwhelming popularity of the new feature, OpenAI has announced that free-tier users will have to wait for access. CEO Sam Altman admitted that the demand had surpassed expectations:

“Images in ChatGPT are wayyyy more popular than we expected (and we had pretty high expectations). Rollout to our free tier is unfortunately going to be delayed for a while.”

However, OpenAI has confirmed that the feature will soon be available to Enterprise and Edu users through its API.

The future of AI-generated art

The rapid adoption of ChatGPT-4o’s image generation tool suggests that AI-driven creativity is here to stay. As artists, designers, and general users continue to experiment with the technology, the debate surrounding AI-generated art—particularly regarding copyright, artistic integrity, and automation’s impact on human creativity—will only intensify.

For now, whether embracing or rejecting AI in animation, one thing is certain: ChatGPT’s new image generator has opened a new chapter in the world of digital art, sparking conversations that will shape the future of creative technology.
