BBC’s celebrity Traitors Unveils first look at all-star line-up for upcoming series
Fans of mind games, strategy, and high-stakes deception are in for a treat this autumn as the BBC has unveiled the highly anticipated first look at its celebrity edition of the hit psychological reality competition, The Traitors. Set to air on BBC One and iPlayer, the series will see host Claudia Winkleman welcoming a glittering line-up of celebrities into the castle’s foreboding walls, where they will battle it out in a thrilling contest of trust and treachery.
This special edition, aptly titled Celebrity Traitors, will comprise nine hour-long episodes, bringing a fresh twist to the beloved format while raising up to £100,000 for the stars’ chosen charities. In a bid to stir excitement among fans, the BBC has released a striking image depicting caricature portraits of the celebrity participants, dramatically displayed along the castle’s grand, imposing walls—a tantalising tease of the tension and drama to come.
Claudia Winkleman, known for her distinctive dry wit and deadpan delivery, couldn’t hide her enthusiasm for the new series. Commenting on the star-studded cast, she said, “We’re incredibly lucky these brilliant people have said yes. I’d love to say we’ll take it easy on them and they’ll just wander round the castle and eat toast for a couple of weeks, but that would be a lie.”
This year’s celebrity line-up is nothing short of dazzling, featuring some of the UK’s most beloved entertainers and personalities. Among those preparing to navigate the treacherous social dynamics of the game are comedian Alan Carr, singer-songwriter Cat Burns, acclaimed actress Celia Imrie, and singer Charlotte Church. They will be joined by renowned broadcaster Clare Balding, historian David Olusoga, rugby star Joe Marler, comedian Joe Wilkinson, legendary presenter Jonathan Ross, journalist Kate Garraway, comic Lucy Beaumont, and actor Mark Bonnar, according to reports from Wales Online.
Also stepping into the castle’s shadowy halls are actor and comedian Nick Mohammed, YouTube sensation Niko Omilana, pop icon Paloma Faith, actress Ruth Codd, national treasure Stephen Fry, actress Tameka Empson, and Olympic diver Tom Daley. The eclectic mix of participants promises a fascinating clash of personalities, as they attempt to outwit, outmanoeuvre, and outlast one another in the name of charity.
Since its debut in 2022, The Traitors has become a cultural phenomenon, captivating audiences with its blend of psychological strategy and intense social gameplay. Its gripping first series captured the nation’s imagination, and the show’s popularity has only surged with each subsequent season. By its third series, it was averaging a staggering 10.3 million viewers across all 12 episodes, with the opening instalment alone drawing an impressive 10.9 million—making it the BBC’s most successful unscripted programme since I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! in 2022.
The series has also proved particularly popular among younger audiences, becoming the highest-performing new entertainment show for 16 to 34-year-olds, drawing in 2.3 million viewers in that demographic, with half of the total audience tuning in via iPlayer.
Its critical acclaim mirrors its ratings success, earning an impressive haul of awards including the BAFTA for Best Reality and Constructed Factual, the National Television Award for Reality Competition, the RTS Entertainment Award, and the Broadcasting Press Guild Award for Best Entertainment Programme. Claudia Winkleman herself has been lauded for her role as host, collecting the BAFTA for Best Entertainment Performance, the RTS Entertainment Performance Award, and the prestigious Edinburgh TV Festival Variety Outstanding Achievement Award.
Produced by Studio Lambert Scotland for BBC One and iPlayer, Celebrity Traitors has been commissioned by Kalpna Patel-Knight, the BBC’s Head of Entertainment Commissioning. With its winning combination of high-profile stars, psychological warfare, and the allure of charity fundraising, the celebrity spin-off is shaping up to be an unmissable television event this autumn.
