Unexpected UK seaside town is home to one of europe’s best beaches

Europe is renowned for its stunning beaches, with golden sands and crystal-clear waters often conjuring images of Spain, Italy, and Greece. These countries frequently dominate the rankings of the best beaches on the continent, and this year’s tripadvisor travellers’ choice awards 2025 are no exception. However, in a surprising twist, a lesser-known UK seaside town has claimed a coveted spot on the prestigious list.

Gorleston beach, located in the norfolk seaside town of gorleston-on-sea, has been ranked at number 23 in tripadvisor’s list of the 25 best beaches in Europe. This unexpected accolade makes it one of only two UK beaches to feature in the rankings, with weymouth beach in dorset coming in slightly higher at number 20.

A hidden gem amongst european hotspots

While many may be surprised by Gorleston’s high placement, it is not the first time the beach has been recognised. It also featured on the same list in 2023 and received another Travellers’ Choice Award in 2024. This repeated recognition highlights its enduring appeal to both locals and visitors alike.

A quick glance at Tripadvisor reviews reveals why Gorleston Beach is so highly regarded. Visitors have lavished praise on its cleanliness, tranquillity, and scenic beauty. One reviewer, Niki H, described it as “absolutely beautiful,” noting the spectacular views and accessible parking options. Another user, jin_dru, referred to it as a “hidden gem,” appreciating its peaceful atmosphere and extensive sandy stretch, which spans approximately 1.5 miles.

Another reviewer echoed similar sentiments, writing: “What a wonderful beach. We went to have a look and didn’t expect much. However, what an amazingly clean beach and walking area.” Visitors have also commended the availability of amenities, including fish and chips, an ice cream parlour, and amusement arcades, which make for a well-rounded seaside experience.

Why gorleston stands out

According to Tripadvisor, Gorleston’s charm lies in its “quintessential British beach” appeal. Its two-mile expanse of golden sand curves around a picturesque bay, making it perfect for classic seaside activities such as bucket-and-spade outings and leisurely strolls along the shore.

For those seeking more adventure, Gorleston also offers a range of water-based activities, including surfing, bodyboarding, and kite flying. Visitors can also explore the nearby promenade, which boasts stunning views along with a selection of cafes and shops.

The best beaches in europe for 2025

Gorleston Beach finds itself in esteemed company on Tripadvisor’s list. The top-ranked beach in Europe for 2025 is Elafonissi Beach in Crete, Greece, which also claimed the title of best beach in the world. Known for its striking pink sands and clear waters, Elafonissi climbed an impressive 23 places to secure the top spot this year.

Here’s the full list of the 25 best beaches in Europe, according to tripadvisor’s travellers’ choice awards 2025:

A growing tourist destination

Additionally, the wider region of East Anglia was recently named one of the world’s must-visit destinations for 2025. Alongside Gorleston, visitors can explore other stunning coastal gems such as Holkham Beach—favoured by Prince William and Princess Kate—Wells-next-the-Sea, Aldeburgh, and Southwold.

Tripadvisor’s global perspective

Commenting on the awards, Tripadvisor’s President, Kristen Dalton, highlighted the diverse experiences that beaches around the world offer. “Tripadvisor’s Travellers’ choice awards uniquely reflect the voices of millions of global travellers and help guide people to plan their best trip yet,” she stated. “Whether it’s strolling the beautiful pink sand beaches of our world winner, elafonissi beach in Greece, experiencing breathtaking vistas in Indonesia, whale watching in Hawaii, or diving in magical bioluminescent waters in Thailand – there really is something for everyone.”

This year’s rankings span six continents and 50 countries, showcasing more than 100 of the best coastal spots. Gorleston’s inclusion in such an esteemed list serves as a testament to the UK’s hidden seaside treasures. With its unspoilt beauty and growing popularity, it’s clear that this Norfolk gem is well worth a visit.
