15,000 Cops to Ensure Law and Order During Ganesh Chaturthi Celebrations in Mumbai

In preparation for the upcoming Ganesh Chaturthi festival, the Mumbai police have mobilized more than 15,000 police personnel to maintain law and order, ensuring a safe and peaceful celebration for the city’s residents. With the festival set to take place from September 7 to 17, authorities have put in place a comprehensive security strategy, deploying thousands of officers and additional resources.

A press note released by the Mumbai police on Friday highlighted the extensive planning and coordination efforts. “Like every year, this year too, Ganeshotsav will be celebrated with great enthusiasm in Mumbai from September 7 to 17,” it stated, reflecting the significance of the festival for the city’s people.

Extensive police deployment

To maintain public safety during the festival, the police force has been bolstered with significant personnel, including:

  • 32 Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs)
  • 45 Assistant Commissioners of Police (ACPs)
  • 2,435 police officers
  • 12,420 other police officials

This large deployment of law enforcement personnel underscores the importance of maintaining peace and security throughout the 11-day festival, which sees millions of devotees participating in various rituals, including the installation of Ganesh idols and processions during immersion days.

In addition to regular police officers, the Mumbai police have strategically deployed several specialized units. These include:

  • The platoon
  • Rapid Action Force
  • Riot Control Squads
  • Delta and Combat Units
  • Home Guards

These well-equipped units will be stationed at critical locations across the city, where large gatherings are expected. Given the high footfall during the festivities, especially on immersion days, these squads are tasked with managing potential crowd-control issues, ensuring the safety of all participants, and responding to any incidents swiftly.

Special arrangements for Ganesh Immersion

One of the highlights of Ganesh Chaturthi is the Ganesh Visarjan (immersion of the idols), which is conducted with great fervor. This process involves thousands of people accompanying idols to water bodies, where they are submerged as part of the ritual.

Given the large crowds that gather for these processions, special measures have been implemented to ensure smooth and safe immersions. The police have made additional provisions to manage the heavy influx of people, particularly on the final day of the festival, which is the busiest. Police officials will be stationed at popular immersion sites like Girgaum Chowpatty, Juhu Beach, and Powai Lake to ensure orderly and safe immersions.

The authorities have also introduced increased surveillance measures. CCTV cameras will be actively monitored, and drones may be used in certain areas to ensure maximum visibility of large gatherings. In congested areas, traffic diversions will be put in place to prevent bottlenecks and maintain the smooth movement of both devotees and vehicles.

Public cooperation encouraged

While the police have taken extensive measures to ensure safety, they have also urged the public to cooperate with law enforcement and help maintain order during the festival. Citizens have been asked to remain vigilant, particularly in crowded areas. Police officials have emphasized the importance of reporting suspicious activities, especially the presence of any abandoned items or bags.

An officer from the Mumbai police department reiterated the need for caution: “People should inform the police as soon as they spot abandoned items and must follow rules and regulations while celebrating Ganesh Chaturthi with enthusiasm and gaiety.” He added that while security measures are robust, public cooperation remains crucial in ensuring a peaceful celebration.

The officer also reminded citizens of the police helpline numbers 100 and 112, which should be used in case of emergencies. Quick responses from law enforcement will be ensured should any critical situation arise during the festival period.

The significance of Ganesh Chaturthi in Mumbai

Ganesh Chaturthi is one of Mumbai’s most widely celebrated festivals, attracting millions of devotees who participate in religious rituals, processions, and cultural events. The festival marks the birth of Lord Ganesha, the deity of wisdom and prosperity, and is celebrated with great enthusiasm not just in Mumbai but across India.

In Mumbai, Ganesh Chaturthi has deep cultural roots, with community pandals (temporary shrines) set up in various neighborhoods where idols of Lord Ganesha are installed and worshipped for the duration of the festival. Popular Ganesh pandals like Lalbaugcha Raja, Siddhivinayak Temple, and Andhericha Raja draw massive crowds, and ensuring security at these locations is a priority for law enforcement agencies.

The large gatherings, processions, and rituals associated with the festival require meticulous planning by the police and civic authorities. The additional deployment of officers, coupled with public vigilance, is expected to ensure a safe and peaceful Ganesh Chaturthi celebration in 2024.

Conclusion

As Mumbai prepares to celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi 2024, the city’s police force is leaving no stone unturned to ensure public safety. The deployment of over 15,000 personnel, supported by specialized units, aims to create a secure environment for citizens to enjoy the festival without any disruptions. The authorities’ message is clear: while robust measures are in place, public cooperation will be key to ensuring that Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated peacefully and joyfully in the bustling city of Mumbai.
