From olympic viral moment to glamorous cover girl: Rachel “Raygun” Gunn’s stunning transformation

Rachel Gunn, known in the breakdancing community as “Raygun,” is back in the spotlight—this time on her own terms. Gunn, who faced intense online scrutiny following her breakdancing performance at the Paris Olympics, appears almost unrecognizable on the cover of the latest edition of Stellar, an Australian lifestyle magazine. Trading her Olympic tracksuit for a stylish blue dress and sleek braid, Gunn’s new look embodies her resilience and determination to rise above the backlash she faced in Paris.

In the Stellar cover shoot, Gunn exudes a fresh confidence, draped in a vibrant blue dress paired with strappy black sandals. With her hair pulled back into an elegant braid and a bold red lip, she emanates a fierce, self-assured glamour. The cover even features a powerful quote from Gunn: “You did not bring me down. You did not succeed. I still stand by what I did.”

A viral olympic moment

Gunn’s road to this moment was anything but easy. As breakdancing, or “breaking,” made its Olympic debut in Paris 2024, Gunn represented Australia with a performance that quickly went viral—not for its technical brilliance, but for its unconventional style. Gunn lost all three of her breaking matches by a decisive score of 18-0, and many online critics and sports enthusiasts were quick to accuse her of not taking the competition seriously. Her moves were seen by some as unpolished, and she became the target of memes, online jokes, and harsh criticism.

Despite the backlash, Gunn stood her ground, even taking to social media to address the controversy. In an Instagram video posted on August 15, she opened up about the hurtful comments she received: “While I went out there and had fun, I did take it very seriously. I worked my butt off preparing for the Olympics and I gave my all, truly.” She emphasized her pride in representing Australia on the global stage, especially in breaking’s Olympic debut.

Gunn’s journey and resilience

Gunn, who is also a lecturer at Macquarie University’s Faculty of Arts, isn’t just a breakdancer; she’s an academic who took on the challenge of competing in a groundbreaking Olympic event. Despite her defeat, she insists that she took the competition seriously and cherished the experience of being part of the historic debut of breaking in the Olympics. “I’m honored to have been a part of the Australian Olympic team and to be part of breaking’s Olympic debut. What the other athletes have achieved has just been phenomenal,” she said, recognizing the accomplishments of her peers while defending her own journey.

This latest appearance on Stellar’s cover reflects her determination not to let negativity define her Olympic experience. With her cover shoot and the strong message she shares, Gunn sends a clear statement to critics: she remains proud of her performance, regardless of the opinions of others.

From athlete to media personality

With her new-found fame, Gunn is reportedly considering offers in reality television, a potential career shift that could allow her to further share her story with a wider audience. While details of her plans remain under wraps, industry insiders believe her unique journey and tenacity could make her an inspiring figure for reality TV audiences. The Stellar feature, set to be fully released on Sunday, is expected to delve deeper into Gunn’s thoughts on fame, her Olympic experience, and her path forward.

The end of an olympic Era for breaking

While breaking made a bold debut in Paris, it won’t be returning for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. The sport’s removal from the Olympic roster highlights the challenges emerging sports face in gaining long-term acceptance on the global stage. Despite its exclusion in 2028, breaking’s Olympic introduction still leaves a legacy—and for Gunn, it marked the beginning of an unexpected personal journey.

Moving beyond the spotlight

Gunn’s journey from Olympic controversy to cover girl speaks to the power of resilience and the ability to reclaim one’s narrative. By stepping into the spotlight again, but on her own terms, she exemplifies the spirit of athletes who face public scrutiny and choose to continue their journey unapologetically. Her story shows that behind every viral moment, there’s a real person with dreams, challenges, and the strength to push forward.

As Rachel “Raygun” Gunn takes on new opportunities, she remains a reminder of the tenacity and courage it takes to stand by one’s passion, even in the face of ridicule.
