Manchester United held off a spirited Brighton & Hove Albion fightback to lead 2-1 at half-time in their EFL Cup third-round tie at Old Trafford on Wednesday night, as one of four ties across the competition delivered goals, drama and a standout individual moment.
Teenager Lacey steals the show
The headline story from Old Trafford was an early goal from teenage forward Shea Lacey, who put United ahead after just eight minutes with a composed left-footed finish, teed up by Youri Tielemans. It was a landmark moment for the youngster: he became the first teenager to score on his full debut start for Manchester United since Marcus Rashford’s famous strike against FC Midtjylland back in February 2018.
Former Crystal Palace striker Clinton Morrison, working as a BBC Radio 5 Live summariser at the ground, was full of praise for the finish, saying he had expected Lacey to go for the far corner but was impressed by how well the teenager manipulated the ball before finding the near side.

Brighton hit back before the break
Brighton, however, refused to fold. The Seagulls pulled a goal back deep into first-half stoppage time when Charalampos Kostoulas showed real determination to chase down a long ball from Jaouen Hadjam, running clear before hooking a finish past goalkeeper Karl Darlow from a tight angle. Questions were asked afterwards about whether Darlow could have done more to close down the angle, with Morrison suggesting the United goalkeeper needed to come out quicker given a difficult starting position for young defender Ayden Heaven.
The goal changed the complexion of the tie. Brighton finished the half the stronger side, with Pascal Gross twice going close, and pundits at the ground felt the momentum had swung Brighton’s way heading into the second period, with the introduction of fresh legs from the bench a further threat to United’s lead.

Elsewhere, Aston Villa moved into a 2-1 lead away at Coventry City. Ross Barkley headed the visitors back level and then in front, converting a corner from Ibrahim Mbaye after Coventry failed to pick him up at the near post — a costly lapse in concentration for the hosts, who had been enjoying a promising spell before conceding. Villa also had a let-off just before the interval when goalkeeper Dan Bentley produced a smart stop to deny a dangerous low free-kick from Mbaye.
Fleetwood cause an early upset
In the tie of the round for underdog appeal, League Two side Fleetwood Town took a surprise lead against Championship opponents Sheffield United shortly after the restart. The goal arrived in bizarre circumstances: a cross from Danny Andrew on the left was headed into his own net by Rhys Norrington-Davies under minimal pressure. Fleetwood, who had started both halves brightly, also saw Ched Evans go close with a 20-yard drive that was well saved by Michael Cooper before the own goal put them ahead. Evans, a former Sheffield United player, was booked in the second half for a rash challenge on his old club.
