Beloved drag performer and actor Bianca Castro-Arabejo, better known by her stage name Jiggly Caliente, has died at the age of 44, her family has confirmed.
The Filipino-American star, who rose to fame competing on the fourth season of RuPaul’s Drag Race, passed away in the early hours of Sunday morning, surrounded by close friends and family. Her death follows complications from a severe infection, which had resulted in the amputation of part of her leg just days earlier.
In a heartfelt statement posted on Instagram, her family said: “It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Bianca Castro-Arabejo, known to the world and cherished by many as Jiggly Caliente.” They described her as having “infectious energy, fierce wit, and unwavering authenticity”, adding that she leaves behind a legacy of “love, courage and light”.
“She touched countless lives through her artistry, activism, and the genuine connection she fostered with fans around the world. Though her physical presence is gone, the joy she shared and the space she helped create for so many will remain forever,” the statement read.
Following news of her passing, an outpouring of tributes from fellow drag queens, performers, and fans flooded social media.
Laganja Estranja, who competed on the sixth season of RuPaul’s Drag Race, remembered Caliente as a “kind, caring soul”, while Drag Race UK star Baga Chipz described her as “one of the kindest, sweetest souls I’ve ever met”.
Cheryl Hole, another Drag Race UK alum, wrote simply: “We will love you forever and always, Jiggly.” Tia Kofi, winner of Drag Race UK vs the World, shared a more personal memory, saying: “Jiggly was someone I came to for advice, looked up to, who gave me support when it was most needed and, I cannot lie, was always there for a good gossip!”
Long-time Drag Race judge Michelle Visage paid her own tribute, reflecting on the special bond they shared: “The laughter was endless, our talks were special, your energy was contagious. You were and remain so very loved. This world has lost an angel and we want you to soar high.”
Born in 1980 in the Philippines, Caliente moved to the Queens borough of New York City as a child. She became a fan favourite on RuPaul’s Drag Race thanks to her infectious humour, vibrant personality, and memorable interactions with fellow queens.
One particularly unforgettable moment came during a heated exchange with fellow contestant Lashauwn Beyond, where the now-iconic phrase “this is not RuPaul’s Best Friend Race” was born – a line that has since become synonymous with the show’s culture.
After her time on Drag Race in 2012, Caliente transitioned into acting, appearing in popular television series such as Broad City and Search Party. She notably played the role of Veronica Ferocity in Pose, the acclaimed drama series that depicted the lives of Black and Latino LGBTQ+ communities involved in New York City’s ball culture scene during the 1980s and 90s.
In 2016, Caliente publicly came out as transgender, further strengthening her position as a fierce advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and visibility. Her openness inspired countless individuals around the world who saw in her a symbol of resilience and authenticity.
She later returned to the Drag Race franchise, competing on RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars Season 6 in 2021. In addition to her competitive appearances, Caliente became a judge on Drag Race Philippines, helping to mentor a new generation of drag performers and bringing her trademark wit and warmth to the judging panel across three series.
Caliente’s loss has left a profound void in the drag and LGBTQ+ communities worldwide. Her family has requested privacy as they grieve, while encouraging fans to honour her memory by continuing her work of spreading love, kindness, and acceptance.
As the tributes continue to pour in, it is clear that Jiggly Caliente’s spirit, artistry, and laughter will endure in the hearts of those she inspired. Her legacy as a trailblazer, advocate, and entertainer remains a shining beacon for all who dare to be unapologetically themselves.
