Netflix experienced a short-lived outage on Tuesday afternoon, leaving a wave of users unable to stream content before the issue was resolved within roughly half an hour.
Reports of problems began surfacing shortly after 3pm EST, with the streaming service quickly climbing the trending charts on Google as frustrated subscribers searched for answers. Outage-tracking site Downdetector logged more than 6,000 reports at the peak of the disruption.
The nature of the complaints varied. Around half of those reporting issues said they were having trouble streaming video, while roughly a quarter said they couldn’t connect to Netflix’s servers at all. A smaller number said they were unable to access the app entirely, pointing to a broader technical fault rather than an issue isolated to one device type or platform.
By around 3.45pm EST, reports of problems had begun to taper off, suggesting the company had identified and resolved whatever had caused the disruption. Netflix has not publicly detailed the cause of the outage.
Brief outages of this kind are not unusual for major streaming platforms, which rely on complex server infrastructure to handle simultaneous demand from millions of users worldwide. Even short interruptions tend to generate a noticeable spike in social media chatter and search activity, given how central the service has become to everyday viewing habits.
For now, service appears to have returned to normal, with no indication that further disruptions are expected.
