Princess Eugenie has given birth to a baby girl at a hospital in Lisbon, marking the third addition to her family with husband Jack Brooksbank and a fresh chapter for a branch of the Royal Family that has increasingly built its life outside the UK.
The couple’s daughter arrived on Monday evening, weighing 6lbs 9oz. She joins two older brothers: August Philip Hawke Brooksbank, born in 2021, and Ernest George Ronnie Brooksbank, born in 2023. A name for the newest arrival has not yet been announced.
News of the birth was confirmed by Buckingham Palace, which said King Charles and Queen Camilla, along with other members of the Royal Family, were delighted to hear the news. Eugenie, 36, shared the announcement herself on Instagram, telling followers she and Jack were “so excited” to introduce their daughter, adding that the family was <cite index=”1-9″>”beyond in love with our girlie.”</cite>
A Royal Birth, But Not a Working One
Unlike some royal babies, Eugenie and Brooksbank’s daughter will not carry the HRH style. She will nonetheless take her place in the line of succession — 15th in line to the throne — overtaking her great-uncle, the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Edward.
That distinction reflects the position Eugenie and her older sister, Princess Beatrice, have long occupied within the family: royal by blood and title, but not “working royals” carrying out official duties on behalf of the Crown. Eugenie has instead built a career away from royal engagements, working as a director at the Hauser & Wirth art gallery in London’s Mayfair. Brooksbank has spent his career in hospitality and marketing.
The family divides its time between Portugal and Ivy Cottage, a home within the grounds of Kensington Palace — an arrangement that placed this birth an ocean and a continent removed from the traditional backdrop of British royal arrivals.
A Pregnancy Announced in Spring
The pregnancy was made public in May, when Eugenie posted a photograph of her two young sons holding up a baby scan, captioned with the news that a new sibling was due later in 2026. Buckingham Palace responded at the time with a statement noting the King had been informed and was delighted by the news — language that echoed almost exactly the Palace’s response to Monday’s birth.
Eugenie and Brooksbank, a former marketing executive turned entrepreneur, married in October 2018 at St George’s Chapel, Windsor, in a ceremony that drew global attention as one of the year’s set-piece royal events.
A Complicated Family Backdrop
The new baby will be the fifth grandchild of Eugenie’s father, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, whose standing within the Royal Family has changed dramatically in recent years. He was stripped of his royal titles, styles and honours by King Charles last year, following renewed scrutiny of his association with the convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Notably, that fall from grace did not extend to his daughters. Both Eugenie and Beatrice retained their own titles despite their father’s removal from royal life, underlining the extent to which the two princesses have carved out identities and careers distinct from his.
For now, the family’s focus is simply on a new arrival. With a name yet to be revealed, the world’s attention on the newest member of the extended Royal Family is likely to continue in the days ahead — even as she begins her life largely outside the public glare her cousins in the direct line of succession are used to.
