Actress Kaylee Hottle, best known for portraying Jia in Godzilla vs. Kong and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, has died following a car accident in Maryland. She was 19 years old.

The news was confirmed by her father, Joshua Hottle, who shared the heartbreaking announcement with family, friends, and supporters through an American Sign Language (ASL) video message. The tragedy has prompted an outpouring of grief from fans, fellow actors, and members of the Deaf community.

A Breakthrough Performance

Hottle made her feature film debut in 2021 as Jia, a young Deaf girl who forms a unique emotional connection with Kong through sign language. Her performance was widely praised for its authenticity and emotional depth, making her one of the franchise’s standout newcomers.

She returned to the role in 2024’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, continuing Jia’s important role in the story alongside actors Rebecca Hall and other returning cast members.

A Proud Member of the Deaf Community

Born into a multi-generational Deaf family, Hottle was fluent in American Sign Language and became an important advocate for Deaf representation in mainstream entertainment.

Before entering Hollywood, she appeared in commercials created for the Deaf community and later expanded her acting career with a guest appearance in the television series Magnum P.I..

At the time of her passing, Hottle was a senior at the Texas School for the Deaf in Austin, where she was remembered as a talented student and a valued member of the school community.

In a public statement, the school expressed its sorrow over her passing and extended condolences to her family, classmates, and friends during this difficult time.

Praise from Co-Stars

During the production of Godzilla vs. Kong, co-star Alexander Skarsgård spoke highly of Hottle’s professionalism despite it being her first major film. He recalled how quickly she adapted to direction and how naturally she performed in front of the camera.

Cast members learned American Sign Language to communicate with Hottle between scenes, helping create an inclusive environment throughout filming.

Recognition and Legacy

Hottle’s performance in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire earned her a nomination for Best Younger Performer at the 2025 Saturn Awards, recognizing her growing impact within the science fiction and fantasy genre.

Although her acting career was only beginning, she became an inspiration for many young Deaf performers by demonstrating that authentic representation could thrive in major Hollywood productions.

Fans Mourn a Rising Star

News of Hottle’s death quickly spread across social media, where fans shared tributes celebrating her talent, kindness, and the positive influence she had on Deaf representation in film.

Many described her portrayal of Jia as one of the most memorable aspects of the recent MonsterVerse films, noting the emotional bond between her character and Kong resonated with audiences around the world.

A Lasting Impact

Kaylee Hottle’s career may have been brief, but her performances helped break barriers for Deaf actors in mainstream cinema. Through her work, she inspired countless viewers and demonstrated the importance of authentic inclusion on screen.

She will be remembered not only for her memorable role in the Godzilla franchise but also for the hope and representation she brought to audiences everywhere.
