When Abhishek Bachchan spoke about living with parents Amitabh and Jaya: ‘My mother has one rule…’

In the world of Bollywood, few couples are as iconic as Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, who have captivated fans with their love story and graceful family dynamics. While recent rumors about their relationship have sparked a media frenzy, it brings back memories of a candid moment the couple shared years ago on “The Oprah Winfrey Show.” In 2009, the famous talk show host Oprah Winfrey interviewed the Bachchan couple, where she asked about their choice to live with Abhishek’s legendary parents, Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan, post-marriage.

During the interview, Oprah, known for her candid and often unconventional questions, expressed curiosity about the dynamics of living with one’s parents after marriage. She wondered how such a setup worked, given cultural differences in the perception of post-marital living arrangements. To this, Aishwarya Rai, as poised as ever, replied, “It’s normal and natural to us.” Her response reflected the rooted Indian tradition of multi-generational families living under one roof—a custom sometimes seen as unusual in Western societies.

However, it was Abhishek Bachchan’s response that added warmth and insight into the family’s values and the strength of their bond. The actor, then known for his roles in movies like Guru and Bunty Aur Babli, explained that it was a family tradition to live together. He noted that his father, Amitabh Bachchan, had also lived with his parents, and he wanted to continue this tradition by staying with his own parents after marriage. It wasn’t just a matter of convenience or obligation, but a meaningful choice that embodied the family’s close-knit values.

A playful exchange between Oprah and Abhishek provided a glimpse into the day-to-day family life at the Bachchan residence, Prateeksha, in Mumbai. Oprah asked if the family eats together or separately, given their busy schedules. With a chuckle, Abhishek shared a rule laid down by his mother, Jaya Bachchan. “My mother has one rule: if we are in the city, we have to have one meal of the day together,” he revealed. This practice, simple yet powerful, highlighted Jaya Bachchan’s efforts to maintain family unity and ensure a moment of togetherness amidst their demanding careers.

During the interview, Oprah was also given a visual tour of Aishwarya and Abhishek’s wedding ceremony, a grand celebration held at the Bachchan residence. Known for her fascination with global cultures, Oprah was in awe of the elaborate rituals and opulence of Indian weddings, noting how they extend for days. Abhishek, ever the proud ambassador of Indian traditions, added that some weddings last over a week, incorporating multiple ceremonies that symbolize commitment and shared values.

At one point, Oprah mentioned the traditional ‘Seven Vows,’ or Saptapadi, which signify the couple’s promises to each other. She joked that with so many vows and ceremonies, getting divorced would be nearly impossible. Aishwarya’s response was both endearing and wise. “We don’t even try and entertain the thought,” she said, with a smile that captured her unwavering belief in commitment. Her words reflected the couple’s intent to build a lasting, grounded relationship, rooted in love and mutual respect.

Fast-forward to the present day, and the Bachchan family remains one of Bollywood’s most revered dynasties. While recent speculations have emerged about a possible separation between Aishwarya and Abhishek, the couple has chosen to stay silent, refraining from addressing the rumors directly. Their mutual choice to keep personal matters private has only added to the intrigue surrounding them. For many fans, this silence reflects a sense of dignity and an unspoken commitment to handling private affairs away from the limelight.

In a world where celebrity relationships are often scrutinized, Abhishek and Aishwarya’s journey is a reminder of the beauty of staying close to one’s roots and family. Living with his parents wasn’t just a practical arrangement for Abhishek; it was a conscious decision to continue a tradition of love, togetherness, and mutual support. Their story underscores a truth cherished by countless Indian families: that home is where family is, and living together can be a beautiful blend of support, understanding, and shared values.
