Elon Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) have made a seismic impact on the U.S. federal government, infiltrating closely guarded networks, prompting tens of thousands of federal employees to resign, and dismantling long-standing bureaucratic norms. Trump’s executive order expands DOGE’s reach
President Donald Trump issued a new executive order on Tuesday, significantly strengthening DOGE’s authority. Citing the need to eliminate “waste, bloat, and insularity”, Trump ordered further reductions in the federal workforce and granted DOGE sweeping control over agency hiring and restructuring.
At the Oval Office signing ceremony, Musk stood beside Trump, dressed in a black MAGA cap, a long black overcoat, and a casual t-shirt, flanked by his young son. Taking questions for half an hour, Musk vowed that DOGE would eradicate government fraud, although he failed to provide specific evidence.
“We’re just adding common-sense controls that should have been in place but weren’t,” Musk stated, exuding confidence as he engaged with reporters.
DOGE’s hidden workforce raises concerns
While Musk has promised transparency, DOGE has yet to reveal its full roster of employees or outline its operational structure. The department’s official website provides only vague details regarding cost-saving targets and links to DOGE-related executive orders.
Further complicating matters, Musk has not disclosed potential conflicts of interest related to his vast business empire, which includes Tesla, SpaceX, and X (formerly Twitter)—the latter now functioning as an informal communications hub for government announcements.
DOGE’s influence has already extended into over a dozen federal agencies, including those responsible for healthcare, weather forecasting, and disaster response. Trump has suggested that the Pentagon will be next on DOGE’s agenda, further escalating concerns about the scope and legality of its reach.
While Trump and Musk claim they are streamlining government functions and curbing excessive spending, it remains unclear how much money they will actually save or whether these reductions infringe upon Congress’s constitutional powers over federal budget allocations.
Calls for judicial impeachments add to political tensions
The aggressive push for efficiency has already sparked constitutional clashes. On Wednesday, Musk called on the U.S. House of Representatives to remove federal judges who have blocked DOGE’s directives.
“We need an immediate wave of judicial impeachments,” Musk declared—a statement certain to intensify tensions between the White House, Congress, and the judiciary.
This bold move has heightened anxieties about DOGE’s unchecked power, with critics questioning whether Musk’s reforms are truly about efficiency or a centralisation of control under his influence.
Who are the DOGE team leads?
Perhaps most controversial is DOGE’s opaque hiring process. Under Tuesday’s executive order, “DOGE Team Leads” will determine which vacant federal positions should be eliminated, preventing agencies from filling certain roles without DOGE’s approval.
Investigative reports by Bloomberg and other media outlets have identified roughly three dozen individuals connected to DOGE, many of whom have ties to Musk’s companies. Several appointees are reportedly young, inexperienced, and former interns, leading to questions about their qualifications and decision-making authority.
Despite growing demands for transparency, the White House has refused to release a list of Musk’s DOGE team members.
Security and privacy risks under scrutiny
The rapid expansion of DOGE’s reach has also raised alarms regarding government data security.
Former U.S. Office of Personnel Management deputy director Dan Blair voiced serious concerns:
“The release of personal information scares the devil out of me. OPM holds data on 25 million people—everyone who has ever worked for the federal government, including members of Congress. This information must not be left in the hands of someone unaccountable.”
Despite such warnings, Musk remains unwavering. Speaking at a conference in Germany last month, he dismissed fears of mismanagement, instead doubling down on his belief that government bureaucracy stifles innovation.
“With government, the real challenge is overcoming bureaucracy,” Musk stated.
DOGE’s first budget cuts: A political flashpoint
The White House has begun touting DOGE’s early financial “successes”, claiming that the initiative has already saved millions of taxpayer dollars. Among the cuts highlighted:
- $101 million in Department of Education contracts related to history, diversity, and inclusion
- $182 million in Health and Human Services contracts related to administrative work
- $168,000 for an exhibit dedicated to Dr. Anthony Fauci at the National Institutes of Health
- $44.6 million in savings from cancelled leases on underutilized government buildings
Despite these claims, official government budget analysts have yet to verify DOGE’s reported savings, leaving the true financial impact in question.
