A flight attendant has been found alive after remaining strapped to a seat that fell through the floor of a damaged aircraft following a deadly collision at New York’s LaGuardia Airport.
The dramatic survival story emerged after an Air Canada Express jet struck a firefighting vehicle on the runway, killing both pilots and injuring dozens of passengers and crew.
Mid-Air Drama Turns to Runway Disaster
The aircraft, which had travelled from Montreal carrying more than 70 passengers and crew, had landed safely on Sunday evening before the حادث occurred.
According to reports, the plane collided with a fire truck while taxiing at high speed—estimated at around 100mph (160km/h)—causing severe structural damage.
Witnesses described a shocking scene. One said it was “like the plane got cut in half” as debris scattered across the runway.
Remarkable Survival Story
Amid the devastation, rescuers discovered a flight attendant still strapped into her seat on the ground after it had fallen through the aircraft during the impact.
Officials have emphasised that seat belts played a crucial role in saving lives, with US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy urging travellers to always remain buckled.
Casualties and Injuries
Two pilots were killed in the crash, while around 40 passengers and crew were taken to hospital with injuries ranging from broken bones to bruising. Most have since been discharged.
Two firefighters involved in the collision also remain in hospital but are reported to be in stable condition.
Emergency Response and Investigation
Authorities said the fire crew had been responding to a separate incident involving another aircraft at the time of the collision.
Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), alongside Canadian officials, are now examining the cause of the crash.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul described the घटना as “an aviation disaster not seen here in over three decades.”
Airport Reopens Amid Disruption
LaGuardia Airport has since reopened, with flights gradually resuming. However, passengers faced long delays, crowded terminals and significant disruption.
Scenes at the airport included long security queues, unclaimed baggage and stranded travellers waiting hours for updates.
Staff shortages linked to an ongoing US government shutdown have added to the chaos, with some security workers reportedly going unpaid.
‘Very Somber Day’
Air Canada’s chief executive described the incident as a “very sombre day” for the airline, offering condolences to the families of those who lost their lives.
Emergency services have been praised for their rapid response, with officials also commending passengers who helped others escape the damaged aircraft.
Conclusion
As investigations continue, the crash raises serious questions about runway safety and coordination during emergency responses. While the survival of the flight attendant offers a rare moment of relief, the tragedy has left a lasting impact on passengers, crew and the wider aviation community.
