Apple iPhone 16 review: A subtle upgrade with future-proof AI promises

Apple launched its much-anticipated iPhone 16 series, focusing on upcoming artificial intelligence features dubbed “Apple Intelligence.” While these AI enhancements are yet to be available, they promise to be the main differentiator for the device in the future. In its current form, the baseline iPhone 16 offers several notable upgrades over its predecessor, delivering a balanced mix of design refinements, performance boosts, and camera improvements. Let’s explore how the iPhone 16 fares and what its future AI capabilities might mean for users.

Design

The iPhone 16 continues Apple’s established design language with its flat aluminum frame and subtly curved edges for an ergonomic in-hand feel. Though it sticks closely to the design template of the iPhone 15, the new model introduces a few distinctive elements. These include the addition of customizable buttons, a redesigned camera island, and color-infused back glass.

The most significant new feature is the customizable “Action Button,” originally introduced on the iPhone 15 Pro series, now available in the standard model. This button can be programmed to quickly access specific functions, adding convenience to the device’s usability. Another new addition is the “Camera Capture” button, enhancing the camera experience by providing quick access to advanced imaging features.

The revamped camera island now houses a vertically stacked dual-camera system, emphasizing its spatial video and photo capture capabilities, designed for use with virtual reality devices such as Apple’s Vision Pro. However, the enlarged camera bump may cause the phone to wobble on flat surfaces.

Apple continues to emphasize durability with the iPhone 16. It features Ceramic Shield glass, which Apple claims offers 50% stronger drop protection while maintaining scratch resistance. The phone retains its IP68 rating, making it resistant to both water and dust. Available in five colors—ultramarine, teal, pink, white, and black—the iPhone 16 exudes both style and strength.

The 6.1-inch display remains unchanged in size but comes with improved brightness, ensuring better visibility in direct sunlight. The display now dims to as low as 1 nit for comfortable viewing in dark environments. However, the absence of a higher refresh rate—stuck at 60Hz—leaves much to be desired, especially for users accustomed to smoother 120Hz displays. Additionally, the lack of an always-on display feature is a noticeable omission.

Imaging

The iPhone 16’s dual-camera system features a 48-megapixel main sensor and a 12MP ultra-wide camera with autofocus. By default, the main camera captures 24MP stills and supports 2x optical-quality telephoto shots using in-sensor zoom. The ultra-wide lens doubles as a macro lens, thanks to its autofocus capabilities, making it ideal for close-up photography.

The main camera shines in good lighting conditions, offering impressive color accuracy, dynamic range, and nearly zero shutter lag. The 2x telephoto zoom works well even in low-light scenarios, though it doesn’t quite match the performance of dedicated telephoto lenses in artificial lighting. The ultra-wide camera, with its 120-degree field of view, is perfect for capturing landscapes, offering color consistency with the primary camera.

Apple has also introduced a new image pipeline in the iPhone 16, which includes Photographic Styles, allowing users to adjust color and tone in real-time. Unlike typical filters, these styles adjust highlights, shadows, and skin tones across the frame. A new on-screen trackpad lets users adjust exposure, depth, and zoom on the fly while capturing images.

Video performance is equally impressive, with all camera sensors supporting 4K video recording at 60fps with Dolby Vision. Apple has also improved audio recording with the introduction of spatial audio capture and an Audio Mix feature, allowing users to edit recorded audio with four presets: Standard, In-Frame, Studio, and Cinematic. These enhancements are well-suited for content creators seeking greater control over their media.

Software

The iPhone 16 ships with iOS 18, bringing a host of new features and enhancements. One of the standout features is the improved India-focused customization options, such as clock widgets available in 12 Indian languages. Additionally, iOS 18 allows more flexible home screen layouts, enabling users to place apps and widgets freely.

Other notable updates include the Live Voicemail feature, which offers real-time transcription of voicemails, and the new Passwords app, which securely stores credentials with end-to-end encryption. The iPhone 16 also benefits from Game Mode, which prioritizes system resources for smoother gaming, particularly for demanding titles like Resident Evil 4 and Assassin’s Creed Mirage.

Performance

The iPhone 16 is powered by Apple’s A18 chip, which ensures smooth and efficient performance across various tasks. The device handles everyday tasks effortlessly and performs admirably under heavy workloads, such as 4K video recording or gaming with hardware-accelerated ray tracing.

Battery and charging

With moderate use, the iPhone 16 offers all-day battery life, though intensive tasks like 4K recording or gaming may drain the battery faster. The phone comes with a braided USB-C cable, supporting fast charging at 20W or higher, taking about an hour to fully charge. Wireless charging supports up to 25W with Qi2 compatibility, but the device’s USB-C port is limited to USB 2.0, capping data transfer speeds at 480Mb/s.

Verdict

The iPhone 16 delivers meaningful upgrades in camera capabilities, design, and software, making it a solid choice for users seeking an all-around reliable device. However, the lack of a higher refresh rate display and slow data transfer speeds via USB-C may disappoint some users. Priced at Rs 79,900 for the base 128GB model, the iPhone 16 provides good value, especially with the promise of future AI-driven updates that could further enhance its performance.
