Now Cancer Will Be Identified with AI Technology: A Breakthrough by AIIMS and IISER Bhopal

Chronicle Reporter, Bhopal

A groundbreaking technological development is underway at AIIMS Bhopal and the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Bhopal. A joint team from these two premier institutions is working on a revolutionary project that uses deep learning and artificial intelligence (AI) techniques to automatically detect head and neck tumors. This project is expected to significantly improve early cancer detection and treatment, marking a new chapter in medical technology.

Under a program organized by TDK Corporation Japan and the Gopalakrishnan Deshpande Center (GDC) at IIT Madras, this team has been selected to participate in the TIIC Accelerator Program 2024. The initiative aims to advance their innovative project and potentially commercialize it, offering new hope in the fight against cancer.

Pioneering Cancer Detection Technology

The team, led by Dr. Rajesh Pasricha from the Radiotherapy Department of AIIMS Bhopal, is developing a technology that can detect tumors in the head and neck regions using AI. The project’s foundation lies in deep learning algorithms, which allow computers to learn from medical images and automatically recognize cancerous growths. This is an especially critical development for head and neck cancers, which are often detected at advanced stages, leading to more difficult treatments and higher mortality rates.

Joining Dr. Pasricha on this ambitious project are medical physicist Avnish Mishra, resident doctor Srinivas Reddy, and Dr. Arvind from AIIMS Bhopal. IISER Bhopal’s Dr. Tanmay Basu, Dr. Vinod Kurmi, and Dr. Firoz Suri are also key contributors to this endeavor. Together, they form a powerful team aiming to revolutionize cancer detection using cutting-edge technology.

Professor Ajay Singh, the Executive Director of AIIMS Bhopal, expressed optimism about the project’s potential, stating, “We have to turn our thinking into reality so that the suffering of the patients can be reduced. Together, we will do something in the treatment of the patient that can bring a change in their life.” He further highlighted the partnership’s aim to make AIIMS Bhopal a center of excellence for modern medical technologies in central India.

A Global First: AI for Cancer Detection

What sets this project apart is that this specific AI-based technology for detecting head and neck tumors does not exist anywhere else in the world. The deep learning algorithms being developed by the team are designed to not only detect cancerous tumors but also to enhance the accuracy of radiotherapy treatments. This can lead to more precise targeting of tumors, minimizing damage to healthy tissues and improving patient outcomes.

The project’s inclusion in the TIIC Accelerator Program is a critical step toward bringing this technology to life. This eight-week workshop at IIT Madras, organized by the GDC and TDK Corporation Japan, will provide the team with resources, mentorship, and a platform to further refine the technology. The focus will be on improving the AI models, ensuring accuracy, and finding ways to integrate the technology into clinical practice.

The team also plans to explore avenues for commercialization, making the technology accessible to hospitals and treatment centers across India and the world. This could mark a significant leap forward in the use of AI for cancer detection, with the potential to save countless lives by diagnosing cancer earlier and more accurately.

A Collaborative Effort

The collaboration between AIIMS and IISER Bhopal represents the merging of medical expertise and technological innovation. While AIIMS brings its extensive knowledge of patient care and medical challenges, IISER Bhopal contributes its expertise in computational techniques, physics, and deep learning.

The team’s work is aligned with the broader vision of integrating technology into healthcare, with AI increasingly seen as a tool to enhance diagnostic capabilities and improve patient care. AI-based medical solutions, like the one being developed in Bhopal, are becoming essential in a world where early diagnosis can mean the difference between life and death. This collaboration is not only a testament to the potential of interdisciplinary partnerships but also highlights India’s growing role in the global medical technology landscape.

Revolutionizing Radiotherapy

One of the most promising aspects of this project is its potential to revolutionize radiotherapy. Current radiotherapy techniques, while effective, can sometimes affect surrounding healthy tissues, leading to unwanted side effects. The use of AI to precisely detect tumors means that radiotherapy can be targeted more accurately, minimizing the risk of damage to healthy cells. This could significantly improve patient quality of life during and after treatment.

According to the team, the application of AI in this field can bring about transformational changes, making treatment safer, faster, and more effective. This project could serve as a model for future AI-driven medical technologies that address other types of cancers and diseases.

The Road Ahead

As the team prepares for their upcoming workshop at IIT Madras, their focus will be on refining the technology and ensuring that it can be seamlessly integrated into clinical settings. If successful, this could lead to the development of modern equipment that enhances the accuracy and effectiveness of cancer treatments, offering hope to patients battling head and neck cancer.

With support from TDK Corporation Japan and the Gopalakrishnan Deshpande Center, the team is well-positioned to make significant strides in this field. The world will be watching as this innovative project moves closer to reality, promising a future where cancer detection and treatment are faster, more accurate, and more personalized.
