The transformative potential of AI offers solutions to complex social challenges, particularly in marginalized communities, as demonstrated by the work being done in Jammu & Kashmir. This evolution underscores a commitment to harnessing innovation for social good, aiming to uplift society through effective public policy.
Harnessing AI for public policy efficiency
The integration of AI into public policy heralds a new era of efficiency and effectiveness in addressing societal issues. Governments worldwide are exploring how AI can optimize resources, enhance government services, and increase transparency. For instance, the Biden-Harris administration has issued an Executive Order aimed at expanding AI testbeds to ensure safety while harnessing the technology’s benefits for critical infrastructure.
In India, the Jugalbandi chatbot exemplifies this effort, bridging the linguistic divide and providing access to 171 government programs in multiple local languages. This innovation significantly reduces barriers for citizens, enabling more straightforward access to essential services. Moreover, AI can predict disease outbreaks, optimize medical supply chains, and develop proactive strategies to support vulnerable communities, ensuring that healthcare services are accessible to all.
Education: Bridging gaps with AI
AI’s potential in education is equally promising. The Schwab Foundation’s ‘AI for Social Innovation’ initiative launched at the 2024 World Economic Forum focuses on empowering social innovators to leverage AI for positive change. AI-driven learning platforms are revolutionizing educational delivery, allowing for personalized experiences that cater to the unique needs of students, irrespective of their location.
In Jammu & Kashmir, educational disruptions due to prolonged conflict have significantly impacted students. AI can provide consistent and tailored learning experiences to those most affected. By utilizing AI-based educational technology, educators can analyze student data and adapt their teaching methods accordingly, ensuring that every student receives the support they need.
Innovation in smart governance
Innovative governance models are emerging as AI becomes a vital component in public sector efficiency. For instance, Dubai’s Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has introduced an AI-driven Business Requirement Document Generator, reducing document generation time from a week to just one day. Such advancements enhance productivity and streamline public services, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
In Kashmir, initiatives like the introduction of e-rickshaws, developed in collaboration with local organizations, demonstrate the potential of AI-driven solutions. This project aims to provide economically disadvantaged communities with reliable income sources while promoting sustainable transportation. By integrating AI monitoring systems, this initiative can achieve meaningful changes at the community level.
Bridging the digital divide
Despite AI’s vast potential, ensuring that these technologies are inclusive remains crucial. The digital divide—characterized by disparities in access to information and communication technologies—continues to hinder progress. The Barefoot Law initiative in Uganda serves as a notable example, using AI to offer free legal advice to marginalized communities. The initiative aims to empower over 663,309 individuals and reach 50 million people across Africa by 2030.
In Oslo, a unified data platform utilizing Microsoft Fabric has been established to analyze housing, healthcare, and public services data, which were previously disconnected. This foundational work sets the stage for more innovative AI solutions that can benefit citizens across various sectors. Ensuring equitable access to the internet and digital literacy is vital for the inclusive advancement of AI technologies.

From healthcare to education and smart governance to sustainable development, the potential of AI to drive social good is limitless. Realizing this potential necessitates deliberate actions, ethical frameworks, and a commitment to inclusivity. As I continue my academic journey at Harvard and beyond, I remain dedicated to advancing innovations that uplift society, ensuring that no one is left behind in our collective progress.
