Tensions around Formula 1’s new 2026 regulations have escalated after former driver Juan Pablo Montoya called for drastic action against reigning world champion Max Verstappen, urging the FIA to consider a race ban.
The controversial comments come as Verstappen continues to openly criticise the sport’s new technical rules, which have been introduced to reshape racing dynamics and increase sustainability.
Montoya: “There Should Be Consequences”
Speaking on the BBC’s Chequered Flag podcast, Montoya did not hold back in his assessment of Verstappen’s remarks. The former McLaren and Williams driver argued that while criticism is acceptable, the tone and nature of Verstappen’s comments cross a line.
“You’ve got to respect the sport,” Montoya said. “It’s fine not to like the regulations, but the way you speak about your own sport—there should be consequences.”
Montoya even suggested that the FIA should issue enough penalty points on Verstappen’s super licence to push him close to an automatic race suspension, a threshold triggered at 12 points.
Verstappen’s Frustration Continues
The Red Bull Racing driver has been the most vocal critic of the 2026 rule changes since pre-season testing. He has repeatedly described the new cars as “anti-racing” and compared them to arcade-style driving, citing concerns over heavy energy management systems.
Despite tweaks introduced ahead of the Miami Grand Prix, Verstappen doubled down on his stance, insisting that the regulations still force drivers to “go slower to go faster.”
The Dutchman has also rejected suggestions that his criticism is linked to Red Bull’s performance struggles, pointing out that he raised concerns as early as 2023—when the team was still dominating the grid.
A Wider Debate in F1
Montoya acknowledged that driver opinions can be influenced by team politics, suggesting that messaging in Formula 1 is often strategic rather than purely personal.
“There are two things,” he explained. “What the driver really feels, and what the team wants them to say. The politics of the sport are very important.”
However, he stressed that criticism should remain constructive and avoid undermining the sport’s image.
Divided Reactions
Montoya’s remarks have sparked strong reactions among fans and pundits, with many defending Verstappen’s honesty and others agreeing that drivers should show greater respect toward the sport’s governing direction.
As Formula 1 adapts to a new era, the clash between outspoken drivers and the sport’s leadership highlights a growing tension—one that could shape how the next generation of racing evolves.
