Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen is reported to be conscious and recovering after collapsing during his country’s international friendly match against Ukraine on Sunday. The incident occurred in the 65th minute of the game and led to the match being abandoned as players, staff, and supporters watched in concern.
Television footage showed Eriksen clutching his chest before falling to the ground. Medical personnel immediately attended to the 34-year-old midfielder, who was later taken for further evaluation.
In a statement released by the Danish Football Association, officials confirmed that Eriksen was conscious and in stable condition.
“Christian Eriksen is conscious and is doing well under the circumstances,” the federation stated.
Denmark national team doctor Morten Boesen, who was also involved in Eriksen’s emergency treatment following his cardiac arrest at UEFA Euro 2020, provided additional reassurance regarding the player’s condition.
According to Boesen, Eriksen briefly lost consciousness but recovered quickly and was able to leave the pitch under his own power. The doctor added that Eriksen’s Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator (ICD) appeared to function as intended.
“Christian is doing well and walked off the pitch by himself. As I see it, the pacemaker responded as it should,” Boesen said.
He further explained that Eriksen would undergo comprehensive medical examinations to determine the cause of the incident and that medical staff remain in close contact with both the player and hospital doctors.
The episode inevitably drew comparisons to Eriksen’s collapse during Denmark’s UEFA European Championship match against Finland in Copenhagen in June 2021. On that occasion, the midfielder suffered a cardiac arrest on the pitch and received life-saving CPR before being stabilized. Following the incident, he was fitted with an Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator (ICD), a device designed to monitor and correct potentially dangerous heart rhythms.
Eriksen’s recovery after the 2021 incident became one of football’s most remarkable comeback stories. He returned to professional football and subsequently resumed his international career with Denmark.
As investigations continue into Sunday’s collapse, the football community has expressed relief that initial reports indicate Eriksen is stable and responsive. Further medical updates are expected once examinations are completed.
