Chelsea target Danny welbeck in surprise transfer move.

Chelsea have opened discussions with Brighton & Hove Albion over the potential signing of experienced striker Danny Welbeck in a move that signals a notable shift in the club’s transfer strategy.

The 35-year-old forward is reportedly interested in joining Stamford Bridge, with both parties optimistic that an agreement can be reached. Chelsea’s pursuit of Welbeck reflects the club’s growing desire to add experienced players to a squad that has largely been built around young talent.

Welbeck enjoyed one of the most productive seasons of his career with Brighton, scoring 13 Premier League goals in 37 appearances. Since joining the Seagulls from Watford in 2020, he has established himself as a reliable attacking option, scoring 51 goals in more than 200 appearances. Earlier this year, Brighton rewarded his performances with a one-year contract extension that keeps him at the club until the end of the 2026–27 season.

Chelsea’s interest in Welbeck comes at a time when uncertainty surrounds several of the club’s current forwards. Joao Pedro is expected to remain the first-choice striker, while the futures of Nicolas Jackson, Liam Delap, Marc Guiu, and Emmanuel Emegha remain unclear. Reports suggest Guiu could leave either permanently or on loan, while Jackson has attracted interest from other Premier League clubs.

The London club has already been active in the transfer market this summer, strengthening its squad with several high-profile signings. Bringing in Welbeck would further demonstrate a change in recruitment policy, combining youthful talent with experienced professionals capable of providing leadership both on and off the pitch.

For Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso, the addition of a seasoned Premier League striker could help improve the team’s consistency and competitiveness after a disappointing domestic campaign. Although Welbeck may not be guaranteed a starting role, his experience, professionalism, and ability to mentor younger teammates could make him a valuable addition to the squad.

If completed, the transfer would represent one of the most unexpected moves of the summer and underline Chelsea’s willingness to rethink its long-term recruitment strategy in pursuit of immediate success.
