Novak Djokovic overcame a spirited challenge from French wildcard Valentin Royer to advance to the third round of the French Open after a physically demanding four-set battle at Roland Garros.
The Serbian legend won 6-3, 6-2, 6-7 (7-9), 6-3 in a match lasting nearly three hours and 45 minutes, but the scoreline only partially reflected the intensity of the contest.
Royer Pushes Djokovic to the Limit
Djokovic appeared comfortable early on, controlling the first two sets with his trademark precision and experience. However, the momentum shifted dramatically in the third set as Royer fed off strong home support on Court Philippe-Chatrier.
The Frenchman refused to back down, repeatedly attacking the net and extending rallies to test Djokovic physically. Despite Djokovic holding a break advantage twice in the third set, Royer forced a tie-break and stunned the 24-time Grand Slam champion by taking it 9-7.
Former British number one Greg Rusedski, speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, noted concerns about Djokovic’s condition during the match, saying the Serbian looked physically troubled in the Paris heat.
Champion Mentality Prevails
The fourth set became a test of resilience.
Djokovic regained composure, broke Royer early, and elevated his level when it mattered most. Even while appearing fatigued, he produced moments of brilliance, including a remarkable forehand winner around the net post that left the crowd stunned.
Royer continued fighting courageously, saving match points and forcing long rallies, but Djokovic’s experience ultimately carried him through. The Serbian finally sealed victory after Royer netted during an exhausting final exchange.
After the match, Djokovic praised his opponent and jokingly admitted he hoped to avoid more French players later in the tournament after being pushed hard by local opponents in consecutive rounds.
Major Upset in Women’s Draw
The biggest shock of the day came in the women’s competition, where world number two Elena Rybakina crashed out against Ukraine’s Yuliia Starodubtseva.
Starodubtseva recovered from losing the opening set to win 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (10-4), producing one of the tournament’s biggest surprises so far.
Meanwhile:
- Iga Swiatek advanced comfortably to round three.
- Elina Svitolina also progressed in straight sets.
- Britain’s Francesca Jones exited after defeat to Marie Bouzkova.
Looking Ahead
Attention now turns to the next round, where world number one Jannik Sinner continues his pursuit of a career Grand Slam. Other major names including Aryna Sabalenka, Naomi Osaka, Coco Gauff and Britain’s Katie Boulter are also scheduled to play.
Although Djokovic advanced, the marathon encounter raised fresh questions about whether the 39-year-old can sustain the physical intensity required to win another Roland Garros title.
