Monzo hit by outage as customers report card and transfer failures.

Digital bank Monzo suffered a technical fault on Wednesday that left a number of customers unable to make card payments or transfers, the latest disruption to hit Britain’s mobile-first banking sector.

What happened

Monzo confirmed the problem in a post on X, saying it had identified the issue and activated its backup service, Monzo Stand-in, to keep essential functions running for affected customers. The bank said it was working on a fix and aiming to restore full service as quickly as possible.

The backup system is designed to let customers continue making card payments, withdrawing cash, freezing their card, and sending or receiving bank transfers even while the main service is down. In practice, the response was mixed — some customers said the fallback wasn’t functioning as advertised, with complaints emerging that cards still weren’t working and transfers couldn’t be completed.

A growing customer base

Founded in 2015, Monzo built its reputation as a branchless, app-first alternative to the traditional high street bank. That model has scaled considerably: the company now serves more than 16 million personal and business customers worldwide.

An outage of this scale is therefore no small matter — for many users, Monzo is not a secondary account but their primary means of everyday spending, making even short-lived disruptions immediately disruptive to daily life.

The bigger picture

The incident is a reminder of the trade-off inherent in branchless banking: without physical counters to fall back on, customers are entirely dependent on app and network stability. As neobanks continue to expand their customer base, incidents like this one are likely to draw scrutiny over how resilient their backup systems really are under pressure.

Monzo has not yet given a timeline for when it expects full service to be restored, but said engineers were moving quickly to resolve the issue for all affected users.
