Taylor Swift lands biggest book launch of the year – but fans spot multiple errors

Taylor Swift has achieved yet another milestone, this time in publishing, with the release of her official Eras Tour book. The eagerly anticipated publication coincides with the conclusion of her record-breaking Eras Tour, which wraps up on 8 December. However, despite the book’s massive commercial success, fans have been quick to highlight several errors in the $40 (£31) release, raising eyebrows about its production quality.

A record-breaking launch

The Eras Tour book has become the biggest book launch of the year, with over 814,000 copies sold in the United States during the Thanksgiving weekend alone, according to Circana, a company that tracks print sales. The impressive figure cements Swift’s status as a cultural and commercial powerhouse.

Notably, the book was sold exclusively through American supermarket chain Target, bypassing traditional publishers and online giants like Amazon. Despite this unconventional distribution method, the book’s first weekend sales rank as the second-biggest nonfiction launch in U.S. history, trailing only Barack Obama’s 2020 memoir A Promised Land, which sold 816,000 copies in its first week.

Fans cry foul over errors

Swifties, however, were left disheartened by what many described as sloppy execution. Reports of spelling mistakes, blurry images, and even glaring production errors quickly surfaced online.

One fan took to TikTok, expressing disbelief at the number of grammatical errors in the book. She claimed to have queued up at 5 a.m. to secure her copy, only to be disappointed by the lack of editorial polish.

“I saw so many [errors], in fact, I am seriously questioning if this book was actually edited,” she said. “When I am reading through things, if there are certain grammar mistakes or sentence structures that are really distracting, it really takes me out of the reading experience.”

Others on X (formerly Twitter) mockingly dubbed the release the “errors book.” One viral post showed a copy printed upside down and back to front, while another listed eight specific typos, including misspelled song titles and missing punctuation.

Mixed reactions among fans

Despite the backlash, some fans defended the book, arguing that the mistakes added a certain charm. One optimistic Swiftie suggested that the misprints might make the book a valuable collector’s item in the future.

“I’d rather a few cute errors if it means Taylor was fully in control over its publishing,” another wrote, applauding Swift’s decision to oversee the book’s release rather than relying on a traditional publisher.

Representatives for both Taylor Swift and Target have yet to comment on the complaints.

The end of the eras tour

The book serves as a companion piece to the Eras Tour, which has become a global phenomenon. The 152-date tour, spanning five continents, has grossed over $1 billion (£785 million), making it the highest-grossing tour of all time according to 2023 data from Pollstar.

With its conclusion in early December, the tour has not only solidified Swift’s dominance in the music industry but also demonstrated her ability to expand her influence into new domains, such as publishing.

Contextualising the success

While comparisons to Barack Obama’s memoir are inevitable, there are notable differences in the sales context. Obama’s A Promised Land was available across all major outlets, whereas Swift’s Eras Tour book was sold exclusively through a single retailer. This makes her achievement all the more remarkable, underscoring the strength of her brand and the loyalty of her fanbase.

Looking ahead

The errors in the Eras Tour book have sparked lively debate among fans and critics alike, but they’ve done little to dent the publication’s record-breaking success. With Swift wrapping up one of the most successful tours in history and now conquering the literary world, 2023 will undoubtedly be remembered as the year of Taylor Swift.

For Swifties, the book is more than a keepsake; it’s a testament to their idol’s unprecedented career. Despite its flaws, the Eras Tour book is flying off shelves, proving once again that Taylor Swift is a force to be reckoned with in every arena she enters.
