Political leaders across India, from Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde to Gujarat’s Bhupendra Patel, have expressed their deep sorrow over the demise of veteran industrialist and philanthropist Ratan Tata, who passed away on Wednesday evening at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai at the age of 86.

Ratan Tata, the Chairman Emeritus of Tata Sons, was not only an industrial magnate who transformed the Tata Group into a global powerhouse but also a humanitarian who shaped India’s business landscape through his commitment to ethical practices and philanthropy. Known for his humility and generosity, Tata’s death has evoked tributes from leaders across the country, highlighting his lasting contributions to business, philanthropy, and national development.

State honors for Ratan Tata

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced on Thursday night that Ratan Tata’s last rites will be conducted with full state honors. In a public statement, CM Shinde remarked that Tata’s immense contributions to India’s growth and his philanthropic endeavors have earned him deep admiration across the nation. He added that Tata’s mortal remains would be kept at the National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA) in Mumbai from 10 am to 4 pm on Thursday, allowing the public to pay their final respects to the legendary industrialist.

Tributes from political leaders

Condolences poured in from all corners of the country, with political leaders across states expressing their admiration for Ratan Tata’s visionary leadership and humanitarian efforts.

Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel posted on X, “Deeply saddened by the passing away of Shri Ratan Tata Ji, a visionary leader whose business acumen and relentless dedication transformed India’s business landscape. A true beacon of humility and integrity, his legacy of giving back to society will continue to inspire generations.”

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin also paid tribute, describing Tata as “a true titan of Indian industry.” In a heartfelt post, Stalin wrote, “Deeply saddened by the passing away of Thiru. Ratan Tata, a beacon of humility and compassion. His visionary leadership not only shaped the Tata Group but also set a global benchmark for ethical business practices. His relentless dedication to nation-building, innovation, and philanthropy has left an indelible mark on millions of lives.”

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee echoed similar sentiments, calling Tata a public-spirited philanthropist whose demise marks “an irreparable loss” for India’s business community. “Saddened by the demise of Ratan Tata, Chairman Emeritus of Tata Sons,” she wrote. “His legacy will live on through the numerous lives he touched.”

Condolences from across the nation

Political figures across the spectrum recognized the unparalleled legacy Tata leaves behind. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu paid a poignant tribute, writing, “Few men have left such an enduring imprint on this world with their vision and integrity as Ratan Tata. Today, we have lost not just a business titan, but a true humanitarian whose legacy goes beyond the industrial landscape to live in every heart he touched.”

In Karnataka, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah praised Tata’s impact on the global business stage, stating, “Tata was a visionary who not only employed millions of people but also elevated the Indian business sector to new heights internationally.”

Other notable tributes included Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, who called Tata’s death “extremely sad and painful.” He highlighted Tata’s contributions in public service and healthcare, noting that the industrialist “will always be remembered for taking India forward on the path of development.”

Sharad Pawar, Chief of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP-SP), remembered Tata for his compassion and his readiness to help during times of national crisis. “Ratan Tata’s nature of always giving a helping hand to overcome every natural or human crisis befalling the country will always be remembered,” Pawar wrote.

Odisha’s former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik referred to Tata as “a shining beacon of India’s entrepreneurial spirit,” adding that his legacy will inspire future generations.

An unforgettable legacy

Ratan Tata’s passing marks the end of an era, but his legacy will continue to shape Indian business and society for generations. Born on December 28, 1937, in Mumbai, Tata’s journey with the Tata Group began in 1961. He eventually became the Chairman of Tata Sons in 1991 and led the conglomerate until his retirement in 2012, at which point he was appointed Chairman Emeritus.

Under Tata’s leadership, the Tata Group saw significant international expansion, with notable acquisitions like Jaguar Land Rover and Corus Steel. His contributions extended far beyond business, encompassing philanthropic efforts that supported education, healthcare, and rural development through the Ratan Tata Trust and Dorabji Tata Trust.

A recipient of the Padma Bhushan in 2000 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2008, Tata was recognized not only for his business acumen but also for his dedication to uplifting society. His work in philanthropy, coupled with his ethical leadership, earned him respect from all walks of life.

As India mourns the loss of one of its most admired figures, the outpouring of tributes reflects the profound impact Ratan Tata had on the nation. His legacy of compassion, humility, and visionary leadership will continue to inspire future generations, reminding us all of the immense power of business when coupled with a commitment to societal good.
