Femke Bol-Broeders celebrated a remarkable bronze medal in the women’s 800 metres at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham, while Jorinde van Klinken secured gold in the discus for the Netherlands.
Bol-Broeders produced one of the standout moments of the evening by finishing third in the 800m final in 1:55.54, matching the Dutch national record set by Olympic champion Ellen van Langen at Barcelona 1992.
The result was particularly impressive because it was only the Dutch athlete’s eighth-ever race over 800 metres. She made the switch from the 400m hurdles and used the European Championships as a major test of her ability over the longer distance.

Switzerland’s Audrey Werro won the European title after producing a championship-winning time of 1:54.81.
Britain’s Olympic champion Keely Hodgkinson finished second in 1:55.01, while Bol-Broeders completed the podium with her record-equalling performance.
Bol-Broeders moved into third place during the race and managed to hold on as the leading athletes pushed the pace in the closing stages.
After the race, she expressed her happiness at matching Van Langen’s long-standing Dutch record.

Van Klinken eventually secured the title before her final attempt after her main challenger, Shanice Craft, was unable to overtake her.
The victory added another major European medal to Van Klinken’s collection after she had already won silver in the shot put earlier at the championships.
Koster Claims Emotional 10,000m Silver
The Netherlands enjoyed another podium finish in the women’s 10,000 metres.
Maureen Koster won silver after a determined performance in Birmingham, finishing behind Italy’s Nadia Battocletti.
Koster crossed the line in 31:45.76, finishing ahead of Belgium’s Jana Van Lent to secure an important championship medal.
The medal was particularly meaningful after Koster had endured several disappointing championship experiences, including an earlier setback in the 5,000m at these European Championships.
She described the silver medal as confirmation that she was capable of delivering on a major championship stage.
Dutch Athletes Shine in Birmingham
The results made it a hugely successful evening for Dutch athletics.
Van Klinken collected gold, Koster added silver and Bol-Broeders secured bronze while equalling a national record that had stood since the 1992 Olympics.
The performances also demonstrated the depth of Dutch athletics, with athletes succeeding across endurance events, throwing disciplines and middle-distance running.
For Bol-Broeders in particular, the bronze medal could signal the beginning of an exciting new chapter in her career. Having only recently moved towards the 800m, she has already established herself as one of the event’s most intriguing new competitors.
