Princess Eugenie has announced the name of her newborn daughter, revealing on Instagram that her third child will be known as Adelaide Elizabeth Annina Brooksbank.
A Name Rooted in Family and History
Sharing the news alongside new photographs, Eugenie said the name was chosen in tribute to “three people we love and admire past and present,” including her great-grandmother Queen Elizabeth II. She added that the name also reflects “English and Portuguese history, two places we love and call home.”
Royal watchers have linked the choice of Adelaide to Queen Adelaide, wife of King William IV, as well as Santa Maria Adelaide of Portugal — a nod to the family’s ties to both nations. The inspiration behind Annina is understood to be a more private, personal connection between Eugenie and her husband, Jack Brooksbank, that hasn’t been publicly explained.
Welcoming Adelaide
Adelaide was born earlier this month at a hospital in Lisbon, weighing 6lb 9oz. She is Eugenie’s third child with Jack Brooksbank, joining older brothers August Philip Hawke Brooksbank, born in 2021, and Ernest George Ronnie Brooksbank, born in 2023.
Marking two weeks since her arrival, Eugenie, 36, wrote that the family had enjoyed “the most special, cosy and love-filled time,” adding that her sons “are already the best big brothers” to their new sister.
Her Place in the Royal Family
Although not styled as a Royal Highness, Adelaide becomes 15th in line to the throne, moving ahead of her great-uncle, the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Edward. Buckingham Palace confirmed at the time of her birth that the King and Queen and other members of the Royal Family were “delighted” by the news.
Eugenie and her family divide their time between Portugal and Ivy Cottage, within the grounds of Kensington Palace. The couple first announced the pregnancy last May with a photograph of their sons holding a baby scan captioned: “Baby Brooksbank due 2026!”
