Police search for 12-year-old boy accused of using BMW to steal holiday caravan

Police across the country are searching for a 12-year-old boy who is accused of using a BMW X5 to tow away a stolen holiday caravan.

The youngster, who is understood to be a member of the travelling community, was due to appear before Harrogate Magistrates Court last week but failed to attend.

Arrest warrant issued

Following his non-appearance in court, magistrates have now issued an arrest warrant for the boy, who reportedly has no fixed address.

A spokesperson for Harrogate Magistrates Court told MailOnline:

“A juvenile was due to appear before Harrogate magistrates charged with theft of a motor vehicle of value unknown, driving it dangerously and handling stolen goods, namely a caravan.
The defendant has not attended and an arrest warrant has been issued.”

Theft caught on CCTV

The incident occurred on 7 March last year, when police received reports at 3:30 pm that a caravan had been stolen from a holiday site near Thirsk, North Yorkshire.

Witnesses reported seeing a black BMW X5, which was later discovered to be using cloned registration plates, towing the stolen caravan away from the site.

Police quickly launched a pursuit operation, tracking the vehicle as it travelled south on the A1 motorway.

Chase on the motorway

Approximately 45 minutes after the theft was reported, officers caught up with the vehicle on the M1 near Garforth, just outside Leeds.

However, the driver—alleged to be the 12-year-old boy—managed to evade capture at the time.

The BMW and caravan were later found abandoned, but no arrests were made at the scene.

Owner witnessed the theft first-hand

The stolen Swift Challenger caravan belonged to Janine Forth, who later shared details of the ordeal on social media.

She revealed that she had arrived back at the holiday park just in time to witness the theft in progress.

“We arrived at the caravan site just as they had hitched it up and were driving away with it.”

She further explained that the thieves had removed the tracking device from the caravan, likely in an attempt to prevent police from locating it.

“If it [hadn’t] been for quick thinking and the amazing response from the police, God knows what would have happened.”

Despite the police’s rapid response, the suspects managed to flee, and the hunt for the young driver continues.

Heightened security measures advised

The case has sparked renewed concerns about caravan theft across the UK, with police urging owners to take extra precautions to protect their property.

A police spokesperson issued the following security advice:

  • Install CCTV and motion sensors around caravan sites.
  • Fit high-quality locks and alarms to prevent easy access.
  • Take detailed photographs of the caravan, both inside and out, to aid in recovery if stolen.
  • Use GPS tracking devices that are difficult to remove.

Caravan theft has been a growing issue in recent years, with thieves often using high-powered vehicles to tow away caravans in a matter of minutes.

Legal proceedings and next steps

The 12-year-old suspect was due to appear before Harrogate Magistrates Court on Friday, 14 March, facing charges of:

  • Theft of a motor vehicle
  • Dangerous driving
  • Handling stolen goods

However, with his failure to attend, authorities are now treating him as a fugitive, actively searching for his whereabouts.

Police have urged anyone with information on his location to contact them immediately.

Growing concerns over young offenders

This case has reignited debates over the age of criminal responsibility in the UK, which currently stands at 10 years old.

While some argue that children involved in crime should be held accountable, others believe that youth offending services should focus on rehabilitation rather than punishment.

With the young suspect still at large, authorities are now stepping up their efforts to ensure he is brought before the courts.
