Coventry City strengthened their push for Premier League promotion with a convincing 3-0 victory over Swansea City, as Matt Grimes scored against his former club in a dominant display at the Swansea.com Stadium.

A rapid burst of three goals in the closing stages of the first half sealed the result for Frank Lampard’s side, who extended their lead at the top of the Championship.

Clinical First-Half Blitz

After a competitive opening half hour, Coventry took control in the 32nd minute when Brandon Thomas-Asante converted from the penalty spot following a foul on Ephron Mason-Clark.

The visitors doubled their advantage just six minutes later. A defensive lapse from Swansea allowed the ball to fall to Grimes, who struck a crisp 20-yard effort that bounced in off the post. The midfielder, a former Swansea captain, chose not to celebrate his goal.

Coventry added a third before half-time through Tatsuhiro Sakamoto, whose effort at the far post took a deflection on its way past goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux.

Swansea Left to Rue Missed Chances

Despite the scoreline, Swansea created several opportunities, particularly in the first half. Josh Tymon struck the crossbar, while Melker Widell hit the post shortly after Coventry’s second goal.

Gonçalo Franco also came close with a header that drifted narrowly wide, as the hosts were punished for their inability to convert promising chances.

Comfortable Second Half for Coventry

With a three-goal cushion, Coventry managed the second half effectively, limiting Swansea’s attacking threat while still posing danger on the counter.

Ellis Simms and Thomas-Asante both had chances to extend the lead, but the visitors were content to see out the match and secure another vital three points.

Promotion Charge Gains Momentum

The win marks Coventry’s seventh victory in their last eight league games, reinforcing their position at the top of the Championship.

They now hold a commanding lead over their nearest challengers, putting them firmly on course for a return to the Premier League.

Swansea’s Play-Off Hopes Fade

For Swansea, the defeat ends a strong run of home form and leaves them 11 points adrift of the play-off places.

Manager Vitor Matos acknowledged his side’s lack of clinical finishing, noting that key moments—particularly the penalty—shifted the momentum of the game.

Conclusion

Coventry’s clinical edge proved decisive in a match where Swansea had their chances but failed to capitalise. With confidence high and results consistent, Coventry look increasingly unstoppable in their pursuit of promotion.
