Hearts take control in scottish premiership title race after strong first-half display

Hearts moved a step closer to a potential historic Scottish Premiership title after a dominant first-half performance against Falkirk at Tynecastle, while their rivals Celtic and Rangers both dropped points in a dramatic night across Scotland.

At half-time, Hearts led 2–0 thanks to goals from Frankie Kent and Cammy Devlin, putting Derek McInnes’ side in firm control of their home fixture and strengthening their position at the top of the table, as reported in live coverage by BBC Sport.

Kent and Devlin put Hearts in charge

Hearts opened the scoring in the 29th minute when defender Frankie Kent powered a header home from a corner delivered by Alexandros Kyziridis. The goal capped a spell of increasing pressure from the hosts, who had begun to settle after a tense start at Tynecastle.

Just five minutes later, Cammy Devlin doubled the advantage. The midfielder reacted quickest in a crowded box after Falkirk failed to clear their lines, and his deflected effort found its way into the net, sending the home crowd into celebration and putting Hearts firmly in control of the match.

BBC Sport’s live commentary noted the growing sense of belief inside the stadium, with the atmosphere described as “rocking” as Hearts took charge of proceedings.

Falkirk resistance and near misses

Despite the two-goal deficit, Falkirk showed signs of life before the break. Calvin Miller forced a save from Hearts goalkeeper Alexander Schwolow with a powerful effort, while Sam Hart also went close from a corner, heading over when well placed.

These chances suggested that Falkirk were not entirely out of the contest, though Hearts remained the more composed and dangerous side.

Title race developments elsewhere

Elsewhere in the Scottish Premiership, the title picture remained finely balanced. Celtic were held to a 1–1 draw by Motherwell at Fir Park, with Daizen Maeda cancelling out an early opener from Elliot Watt. BBC Sport reported that Celtic also saw a late Arne Engels effort strike the crossbar amid controversy, with no VAR intervention.

At Ibrox, Rangers also finished the first half level at 1–1 with Hibernian after Thelo Aasgaard produced a “terrific” curling free-kick to equalise just before the break, according to BBC Sport’s live updates.

Pressure building at the top

With all three title contenders involved in tight matches, the live table situation highlighted how significant Hearts’ lead could become if their advantage holds. BBC Sport’s coverage noted that goal difference could still play a crucial role in deciding the destination of the title, especially with upcoming fixtures still to come.

Outlook

With Hearts in control at Tynecastle and their rivals failing to pull away in their respective matches, the second half promises to be crucial in shaping the final stages of the Scottish Premiership season.

As BBC Sport’s live report summarised, it remains “a long way to go,” but Hearts have placed themselves in a commanding position at a pivotal moment in the campaign.
