Mercedes sensation Kimi Antonelli delivered another commanding performance on Sunday, securing victory at the Monaco Grand Prix and extending his lead in the Formula 1 World Championship after a dramatic race filled with safety cars, penalties, and a red flag.
The 19-year-old Italian claimed his fifth consecutive victory of the season, further cementing his status as the championship favourite. Antonelli crossed the finish line ahead of Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton, while Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar completed the podium after post-race penalties reshuffled the final standings.
The race initially appeared set to become a routine Monaco procession after Antonelli made a strong start from pole position. His main challenge disappeared almost immediately when Max Verstappen suffered an engine problem at the start and retired after the opening lap.
With Hamilton unable to match the pace of the Mercedes driver, Antonelli steadily built an advantage, controlling the race from the front while expertly managing tyre wear and brake temperatures around the streets of Monte Carlo.
“It was one of those days where everything felt natural,” Antonelli said after the race. “The car gave me confidence to push and manage the race exactly how I wanted. The job isn’t finished, but we’re moving in the right direction.”
Chaos Changes the Race
The calm atmosphere was shattered late in the race when Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll crashed at the final corner, triggering a safety car.
Moments later, Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc suffered an almost identical accident at the same section of the circuit before the restart could take place. The incident raised concerns about damage to the track surface at the famous Antony Noghes corner, forcing race officials to red-flag the event.
Leclerc later admitted responsibility for the crash but suggested brake issues may have contributed to the mistake.
Following extensive repairs, the race resumed with a standing restart. Antonelli once again executed a flawless getaway, holding off Hamilton and quickly re-establishing control.
Championship Picture
The victory significantly boosts Antonelli’s championship hopes. Combined with a disappointing race for teammate George Russell, who finished outside the points after serving a drive-through penalty, the young Italian now enjoys a substantial 66-point lead over Hamilton in the drivers’ standings.
With 16 races still remaining in the season, Antonelli remains cautious but acknowledged that the team is operating at an exceptionally high level.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff praised the teenager’s maturity and consistency, describing the performance as “championship-calibre driving under immense pressure.”
Podium Drama
Although Pierre Gasly initially crossed the line in third place for Alpine, a post-race penalty for speeding in the pit lane dropped him to seventh. The decision promoted Red Bull’s Isack Hadjar to the podium and elevated McLaren’s Oscar Piastri to fourth.
Racing Bulls also enjoyed one of their strongest weekends of the season, with Liam Lawson finishing fifth and rookie Arvid Lindblad securing sixth place.
Fernando Alonso claimed Aston Martin’s first point of the season after Sergio Perez lost tenth position due to a time penalty.
