‘Today’ star Hoda Kotb gets personal about why she split from Fiancé Joel Schiffman

In January 2022, fans of the Today show were surprised to learn that Hoda Kotb had ended her engagement to her fiancé, Joel Schiffman. The couple, who had been together for eight years and engaged since 2019, seemed solid from the outside, but as Kotb has since revealed, there were underlying reasons for their split.

In a candid conversation during the August 12 episode of the Jamie Kern Lima Show, Kotb opened up about the dynamics of her relationship with Schiffman and what ultimately led to their breakup. The Today co-anchor reflected on their time together, shedding light on how they reached a point where staying together no longer felt like the right path.

Kotb began by expressing her deep respect and affection for Schiffman, emphasizing that their breakup wasn’t due to a lack of love or mutual admiration. “Joel is one of the best people I know,” she said in a heartfelt clip posted on YouTube. “He really is a great human being, and I feel like I’m a great human being. But sometimes two great human beings together isn’t enough to make it work.”

One of the key factors that Kotb highlighted was the feeling that she and Schiffman were growing in different directions. While both were strong individuals, their paths in life began to diverge, making it difficult for them to stay in sync as a couple. “I think when people are growing at different paces, it’s hard to be in sync. And I think a lot of people are probably in these situations. I get it,” Kotb explained, resonating with many who have faced similar challenges in their relationships.

Despite the end of their romantic relationship, Kotb and Schiffman have remained on good terms, particularly for the sake of their two daughters, Haley and Hope. Their commitment to co-parenting and maintaining a positive relationship is evident, as Schiffman was recently seen celebrating Kotb’s 60th birthday with her and the rest of her family in early August. While they continue to be part of each other’s lives, Kotb acknowledged that the romantic chapter of their relationship has closed.

For Kotb, the breakup was not just an end but also a new beginning. Over the past two years, she has taken time to reflect on her life and what she truly wants moving forward. Despite the challenges of the breakup, Kotb remains optimistic about finding love again. She shared that she now has a clearer vision of what she desires in a romantic partner and feels more grounded in who she is.

“When I close my eyes and I envision the romantic part of my life, I can see it very clearly — I know it is coming for me,” Kotb revealed, expressing confidence in her future. She further explained how this period of self-discovery has been transformative. “For the first time in my life, since after Hope, I am me. Someone’s meeting me – not the version that you might want, or the version that I’ll twist a little bit to fit your needs or what is appealing to you. But this is who I am. I feel like, once you get there, you’re like, your heart rests.”

Kotb’s words are a powerful reminder that growth, both as individuals and as partners, is crucial in any relationship. Her journey reflects a deep understanding that sometimes, despite love and admiration, two people may find themselves on different paths. By embracing this truth, Kotb has not only found peace in her decision but also renewed hope for what lies ahead.

As Kotb continues to navigate life as a single mother and a prominent television personality, she remains open to the possibility of new love. Her story resonates with many who have experienced similar transitions, offering a message of hope, resilience, and the importance of staying true to oneself.
