This Artsy North Carolina mountain town has Asheville vibes without the crowds and cost

For travelers enchanted by the artsy, vibrant atmosphere of Asheville, North Carolina, but put off by its growing crowds and rising costs, there’s an alternative just a couple of hours north: Boone, North Carolina. Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Boone offers the same cultural richness, outdoor adventure, and stunning mountain views as Asheville, but with a more laid-back vibe and a lower price tag.

Boone: The Cozier alternative to Asheville

Boone is a small Appalachian town that exudes a cozy, close-knit community ambiance. While Asheville draws millions of visitors each year — around 12.5 million, to be exact — Boone remains a bit of a hidden gem, attracting fewer tourists and offering a more intimate experience. The cost of living in Boone is also about 15% lower than in Asheville, making it an appealing destination for budget-conscious travelers looking for a mountain getaway without sacrificing quality.

Arts and culture in Boone

One of Boone’s highlights is its thriving arts scene, reminiscent of Asheville’s creative spirit but on a more approachable scale. Downtown Boone is home to the Turchin Center for the Visual Arts, which showcases a variety of local and regional artwork. The town is a hub for artisans, with numerous galleries and studios displaying handmade crafts, pottery, and unique works that reflect the area’s rich cultural heritage.

History buffs will also find plenty to explore in Boone. The Jones House, a historic building dating back to 1908, now serves as a cultural center and art gallery. Another must-see is the Lovill House Inn, built in 1875, where visitors can stay overnight and experience a piece of Boone’s history firsthand. The town’s connection to American pioneer Daniel Boone, for whom it was named, is evident in various monuments and statues scattered throughout the area.

For a truly immersive historical experience, the Hickory Ridge History Museum is a must-visit. This living history museum offers a glimpse into frontier life with live actors recreating scenes from the past. Visitors during the summer can also catch the museum’s “Horn in the West” performance, which tells the story of the American Revolution as it unfolded in the region.

Boone’s culinary delights

Boone’s culinary scene is a celebration of Appalachian flavors and farm-to-table dining. Many of the town’s eateries pride themselves on using locally sourced ingredients, creating dishes that highlight the best of the region’s produce and culinary traditions. For those looking to indulge, nearby Blowing Rock is just a short drive away and is home to The Restaurant at Gideon Ridge, a James Beard Award semifinalist for 2024.

Wine enthusiasts will find the Boone Area Wine Trail a delightful experience, offering the chance to explore local wineries and enjoy the scenic mountain views while sipping on locally crafted wines. The trail is a perfect way to spend a leisurely day, whether you’re a seasoned oenophile or just looking to enjoy a relaxing afternoon.

Outdoor adventures abound

Boone’s appeal extends beyond its cultural and culinary offerings to the great outdoors. The town is a paradise for nature lovers, with activities ranging from hiking and birdwatching to more adrenaline-pumping adventures like ziplining. The surrounding Blue Ridge Mountains provide endless opportunities for exploration, with trails leading to stunning waterfalls such as the iconic Crabtree Falls — a favorite spot for photo ops and camping.

In the warmer months, the New River becomes a playground for water enthusiasts, with tubing, kayaking, and fishing among the popular activities. Anglers, in particular, will enjoy the chance to catch mountain trout in Boone’s many rivers and lakes. Come winter, Boone transforms into a snowy wonderland, with nearby resorts offering skiing and snowboarding on fresh powder.

Boone also boasts a section of the Blue Ridge Parkway, a scenic U.S. road trip route known for its breathtaking views and serene environment. Unlike the more crowded sections near Asheville, Boone’s portion of the Parkway offers a more peaceful experience, making it ideal for those seeking solitude in nature.

A serene mountain escape

Boone, North Carolina, is the perfect alternative for those who love Asheville’s vibe but want to avoid the hustle and bustle of its crowds and high costs. With its rich cultural offerings, delicious farm-to-table cuisine, and abundant outdoor adventures, Boone provides a truly authentic mountain town experience. Whether you’re exploring its quaint shops, hiking its tranquil trails, or simply soaking in the scenic beauty, Boone offers a serene escape that captures the best of what the Blue Ridge Mountains have to offer.
