AI could save Cheshire East council £60m, report claims

A new internal report by Cheshire East Council suggests that artificial intelligence (AI) could save the local authority up to £60 million over the next five years. The report highlights AI’s potential to reduce costs in key public services, such as customer service, adult social care, and children’s services. It also outlines how AI could alleviate administrative backlogs and improve data accuracy, contributing to overall improvements in the council’s operations.

The findings of the report are set to be discussed by the council’s corporate policy committee in the coming days, with officers hoping that AI could become an integral part of the council’s long-term transformation plan. This strategy aims to streamline operations, reduce expenditure, and enhance the quality of services for residents of Cheshire East.

The report indicates that AI could be implemented in various areas of the council’s services, ranging from the automation of routine tasks to more complex roles in social services. One of the key areas of focus is customer service, where AI-driven solutions could help to handle and resolve queries more efficiently, reducing the need for staff to manage routine inquiries. By introducing AI tools in the council’s contact centres, the number of calls handled by human agents could be significantly reduced, with AI managing a growing proportion of general inquiries.

Moreover, the use of AI in the adult social care and children’s services departments is also a key proposal in the report. In these areas, AI could assist social workers in making data-driven decisions, helping to optimise resource allocation and ensuring that those in need of services receive timely and effective care. By automating some administrative tasks, AI would also free up more time for staff to focus on direct engagement with vulnerable individuals and families, thus improving service quality while maintaining operational efficiency.

In addition to streamlining customer service and social services, the report suggests that AI could play a role in reducing administrative backlogs. With the growing demand for council services, many local authorities, including Cheshire East, have struggled with backlogs of paperwork, case files, and routine tasks. AI could help by automating the sorting, processing, and tracking of documents, leading to faster resolution of cases and improving workflow within the council.

The potential savings outlined in the report are significant, with estimates ranging from £40 million to £60 million over the next five years. According to the authors of the report, these savings would be realised through improved service delivery, reduced costs, and enhanced operational efficiency. AI is seen as a key tool in achieving these efficiencies, helping the council meet its financial targets without compromising on the quality of services for local residents.

The potential for AI to create savings is particularly important for Cheshire East Council, which has faced financial difficulties in recent years. Like many local authorities across the country, Cheshire East has had to find innovative ways to balance its budget and maintain services amidst tightening financial pressures. The council has already begun implementing a broad transformation plan aimed at reducing costs and improving the efficiency of its operations. The introduction of AI could be a critical part of this transformation, allowing the council to modernise its services and make more informed decisions about resource allocation.

In addition to these savings, the report highlights the potential for AI to enhance the council’s ability to collect and analyse data. With more accurate and comprehensive data, the council would be in a better position to identify trends, plan for future needs, and assess the effectiveness of its services. Improved data accuracy is seen as an important aspect of both delivering better services to residents and ensuring that the council can operate more efficiently.

The financial challenges faced by Cheshire East Council are not unique. Many local authorities across the UK are grappling with reduced funding and increased demand for public services. In response, several councils have begun exploring AI and other emerging technologies to modernise their operations and reduce costs. Cheshire East is one of the latest councils to examine the potential of AI, and the findings of this report could provide a blueprint for other councils looking to harness the power of technology to improve public services.

The report also comes at a time when the council has been granted exceptional financial support from the government for the second year in a row. This funding allows the council to borrow money to cover day-to-day spending and help manage its budgetary shortfall. While the additional funding provides some relief, the council continues to explore ways to reduce its reliance on external financial support by making its operations more cost-effective.

As the report is discussed by the corporate policy committee, local residents and council staff will be closely watching how AI could shape the future of local government services in Cheshire East. The implementation of AI is likely to be phased in gradually, with initial pilots in key areas such as customer service and social care. If successful, the technology could be expanded to other areas of the council’s operations, further improving efficiency and delivering significant savings.

Ultimately, the success of AI in Cheshire East will depend on the council’s ability to adapt to new technology while maintaining its commitment to providing high-quality services. If implemented effectively, AI could not only help the council save money but also transform the way local government works, making it more responsive, efficient, and better equipped to meet the needs of the community.
