Bonnie Greer, the American-born playwright, novelist and cultural commentator who became one of British broadcasting’s most distinctive voices, has died at the age of 77.

From Chicago to the West Village

Greer grew up in Chicago, one of seven children in a working-class family, and showed an early creative streak, writing her first plays at the age of nine. She initially pursued a law degree but abandoned it after encountering entrenched sexism among her professors, redirecting her ambitions toward the theatre.

She moved to Manhattan’s West Village in the late 1970s, drawn by the Actors Studio, and lived through the devastating early years of the Aids crisis, during which she lost around 35 friends. She later credited that community with shaping her outlook, crediting her gay friends with teaching her the spirit of rebellion and joy that stayed with her for the rest of her life. A touring visit to the Edinburgh Festival offered an escape from the grief of that period, and she went on to settle permanently in Britain in 1986.

A playwright’s career

In the UK, Greer built a substantial body of work for stage and radio, serving as playwright in residence at the Soho Theatre in the late 1980s before writing for BBC Radio 3 and 4 through the following decade. Her best-known work, a 2005 play dramatising the friendship between Marilyn Monroe and Ella Fitzgerald, told the story of how Monroe used her fame to help get Fitzgerald booked into a leading Los Angeles jazz club at a time of racial segregation in entertainment — a gesture Fitzgerald credited with transforming her career. The play was later adapted into a stage musical. Greer also published two novels, Hanging by Her Teeth (1994) and Entropy (2009), though her most natural creative home remained the collaborative, discursive world of theatre and broadcasting.

A fixture of cultural life and public boards

Greer was heavily involved in Britain’s cultural institutions, sitting on the boards of organisations including the Orange Prize, the British Museum, the Royal Opera House and the London Film School, and serving as president of the Brontë Society. As a broadcaster, she was a longstanding contributor to BBC Two’s Newsnight Review, wrote criticism for Time Out, and worked as a political commentator for several newspapers, including the Guardian.

The 2009 Question Time controversy

Greer’s most widely remembered television appearance came in 2009, when she shared a Question Time panel with Nick Griffin, then leader of the British National Party, a decision by the BBC that drew significant criticism given Griffin’s history of racist and antisemitic rhetoric. Fellow panellist Sayeeda Warsi reportedly checked with Greer beforehand about how she felt sitting near him; Greer’s characteristically unbothered reply invoked her Chicago upbringing. On screen she remained composed and assured throughout, though she later described the experience privately as deeply unsettling. She subsequently turned the episode into material for an opera staged at the Royal Opera House.

Legacy

Colleagues remembered Greer as generous and engaged on panels — soft-spoken but incisive, and rarely without a strong opinion. She was once dubbed “Newsnight’s kindest critic.” She spoke often about theatre’s purpose, describing it as a medium meant to slow the world down so audiences could genuinely examine it, insisting that art was never simply entertainment but a vehicle for real engagement.
